Completed - thankyou!! :) help with place name please
« on: Friday 22 April 11 06:10 BST (UK) »
Hi
hoping someone can help me with this place name, which appears on the convict indent of Henry WALKER, who was one of the Chepping Wycombe machine breakers of 1831.
He lists his mother as Sarah, a paper maker in NP (Wycombe Marsh), 3 brothers William, John and Thomas, and one sister Mary, married to Joseph Collins, a paper maker in ??North Newton Exon, or maybe G__on
it is the last word I'm having trouble with :)

The last word is Oxen. Meaning Oxfordshire.

I don't know of a North Newton in Oxfordshire.
There was a North Newington  :-\

Just in case you don't already have it here is some information about the WALKER and COLLINS families:

North Newington, Oxfordshire, is the correct residence for Joseph and Mary COLLINS. It is a township in the parish of Broughton and Joseph and Mary baptised three children there - Martha Sarah on 9 June 1833, Ann on 2 August 1835, and Joseph on 25 December 1837. By 1841 Joseph and Mary had returned to High Wycombe which was, in fact, where he was baptised on 9 March 1806. In 1841 he is described as a paper maker but by 1841 he has become a victualler and is living in Loudwater in the parish of High Wycombe. He seems to have died before 1861.

Henry WALKER was the son of Richard WALKER and Sarah FOX who married at Hughenden, Buckinghamshire, on 17 January 1792. He was baptised at High Wycombe on 30 July 1809. Mary WALKER the daughter of Richard and Sarah was baptised at West Wycombe, Buckinghamshire on 25 April 1802.

Buckinghamshire Machine Breakers: The Story of the 1830 Riots by Jill Chambers tells the story of the riots from the first threatening letters received by farmers and paper manufacturers in November, through to the climax when attacks were made on the paper mills along the Wye stream at Chepping Wycombe. Details are included from the week of trials held at Aylesbury in January 1831 and there are also family details of many of those concerned. There are several references to Henry WALKER. You should be able to purchase a copy of the book from genfair. Just put Buckinghamshire Machine Breakers into your search engine.

thanks Orpheus
somewhere along the line I did have those parents for Henry, but hadn't verified them- is your info from the Hughenden baptisms CD?
I did wonder why Henry was transported but his brothers William and John were not - no doubt will get more info from Jill Chambers book
interestingly, Henry named his children Sarah, Mary, Elizabeth, Henry and Jane
thanks again
