Burke
« on: Saturday 23 April 11 18:59 BST (UK) »
Hi, i am new to the board and have just started to try to put together my partners mums tree. His mum's gran and grandad were Lilian Mary Russell and James Witham Burke. i know they were married in 1921 at registery office in Chorlton on Medlock.  they are both now deceased.
I just can't seem to get anywhere with this and i am struggling. I would appreciate any help.
Thank you
Gina

here are the references you need to order a marriage cert from the GRO :

 Year / Quarter : Mar 1921
 Groom : Burke    James W
 Bride : Russell    Lilian M
 Registration District:     Chorlton
 Volume : 8c
 Page : 1821

The cert will show you additional details such as their fathers names and occupations...  should help trace the lines back a bit further

Hi and welcome to rootschat
If you have an idea of when they died then it is possible that record will have a birth date on it.     If you can get hold of their marriage certificate it will give the names of both their fathers as Shane says and we may be able to trace them on some census records.   www.freebmd.org.uk may be useful to look for births.
If you haven't already, please take a few moments to read our guidelines for posting here

We do not allow any details of living people so I amended your post slightly.

I have found a little more info, James is called James William Burke( not witham). He died on the 7th May 1987 aged 87.. He also had a son called James Arthur Burke who died on May 2nd 1995 aged 66. Lilian Russell apparently died in Bournemouth in the late 60s early 70s.
also James William Burke had  a brother and sister Bernard and May.
So i have not done bad,i am getting there very slowly. But thank you for your help.

Unless you can be sure where James William was born then I think you are going to have to get the marriage certificate.  There are too many of that name born at that sort of time for you to be sure which one he is.    A surprising number of Bernard Burkes too and May is often a shortened version of Mary.
I tried looking at the 1901 census but there are just too many to pin him down.

Hi Gina

There are a couple of possible entries in the 1900 birth index but without a middle name, have you used freebmd before?

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

Although the informant on his death certificate could have given the wrong information.
