Patrick Quinn, Ross common.

I am trying to find the parents of Patrick Quinn b)1830 in Ross common, Riltrock.

He married Mary Ann Bouldram in Winterton, Lincolnshire in 1886.

Have him on the 71, 81, 91, 01, 11 census.

Why did you post in this request in Galway?
Does family history claim to be from Galway as when I had a quick look at 1911 census and I think he was born in Co. Roscommon

His son-in-law is listed from the same place which is difficult to make out! but the Ross Common is very clear
It could be a phonetic version of their townland or parish

I would hazard a guess based on the SIL's surname that they were from Killtullagh which could be pronounced with a strong "OCK" at the end and therefore misspelled or Kilcorkey, Castlerea for the same reason

Both names are prevalent in that area on the Griffiths Valuation and 1901 census

I'l hazard Caltra near Ahascragh and Mountbellew pronounced like Cyaltrock in Irish as Cealtrach and the local tendency to pronounce A like an I = Ciltrock

Funny enough the nearby village of Moylough is pronounced remarkably  like Myluck or Myluchhhh

The area is very close to County Roscommon

Seeing as my great grandparents came from near Caltra I should have thought of that one

I looked him up on the UK census and in 1911 he was living with his extended family including his son-in-law MULLARKEY

The entry is exactly the same for both men and clearly ROSS COMMON but followed by a badly written and possibly KILTROCK or similar

I can see no reference to Galway and wondered why the query was started here?? curious creature that I am!

There is a Caltra in Roscommon too , see HERE for the area/parish

Mind you that means it is heading for a midlands accent with a broad and lazy a sound, Caaalthrra sort of thing.

On the rules of Irish ( they were all native speakers back then)

Caltra = The place
Cealtrach ( anglicises.  to ock) person emanating from or belonging to a place called Caltra ,Man or Woman OF Caltra

Do you have a father’s name from his marriage?
There are baptisms for Martin Mullarkey in Kiltulla parish. FindMyPast and Ancestry have indexes otherwise you have to search the parish records.
Of the ones around the same, Thomas occurs more than once as a father though.
