As its hard to find the dates when he changed regiments?

It is a bit time consuming, but the service number in each regiment tells you when he joined that regiment.

That is how I can tell you when he joined Bedfords. You are on your own to tell when he joined the other two.

You need to know the battalion of the Border regiment (that comes from the medal roll in Kew) and the date he joined (from service no in Borders). That will enable you to get the movements of that border battalion when he was with them.

You then need War Diary of each of the three battalions he was with which together will give you an accurate picture of what he did

Nobody said this sort of research is easy, but it is a fascinating puzzle to put a story together.

Re the Border Regt, I came across this today on Great War Forum

The main rump of the Border Regiment's 209** numbers appear to be enlistments dated around 5/6 Nov 1915. At the high end of this range and the early 210** numbers, it looks like they were used for soldiers transferred to the Borders e.g. 21014 was issued to a pre-war Borders man on 9 Nov 1915 and 21037 was issued (no date given) to a Notts & Derby man with an original enlistment date of 20 Mar 1909. From this I would say that 20989 was issued o/a 6-9 Nov 1915.

Your man with 21036 looks to have joined the Borders in Nov 1915. You still need to know the battalion to know what he was doing

thankyou, things are starting to piece together now.
As it says he died and was not killed in action/ wounded etc.. so im presuming from an illness/disease. Is there anywhere i can find out what he actually died of.??

As was said to you in an earlier post, you buy the death cert, costs you £9.50 and you do it online at the GRO. I will/should say what he dies of

My Great Uncle died in Mesopotamia (Iraq) in WW1 1917.
Have found out that India was the usual Medical Evacuation Location from Mesopotamia. (Hence thats why he is buried in Chennai, India).
How did they get the ill or injuryed soldiers to india in the first place. Were there hospital ships, if so do you have any names?.
What were the hospital names out there?

the best place to begin is on the site "the long, long trail" (google this and key mesopotamia in the search section )
this will give you information relating to the many units serving in that campaign and may point you in the direction of your research.
