Hi Ray

I have been going round in circles trying to find Parrots Dell, ;)

If you follow the route on the 1881 from Common Road (Rose & Crown) it leads to Rose Cottage on Common Road & then the Dells seem to be on what was Colley Land, down to Currants Bottom, (under the railway bridge) & Homefield Road as of now. I can't find them on a map at all. Then again they could be in the middle of the Common some where, or even the other side near Banstead Downs & Solesbridge Lane........ :'(

What do you think.

Parrots Dell, my theory.

Is Turneys Orchard now.
Just got to prove that the cottage on the corner is Rose Cottage.

(unfortunately Google have blurred the cottage name and the ones opposite)

Comparing the "roads" layout 1881 to 1891.

(lots of Costers/HumphsandTibbles to map)

Hi Ray

Yes, I think I agree with you. Looks like I was actually heading the wrong way.  :)

Rose Cottage is still there as it sold in 2001 on Rightmove but I can't pick it up on Street Map.

Pity I can't ask my Grandparents or better still my Grt Grandparents. Hey ho.

Hi Ray

Can't believe I missed it. :o Rose Cottage is the white end of terrace along Common Road next door to the Chorleywood Golf Club. There is even a plaque on the wall.  :D

Hi everyone,
so sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you, I have been rushed off my feet.
I eventually got the page back from the Herts advertiser, but it was really rather boring. It states that '' Francis Albert  Darvill (16) labourer Chorley Wood was bought up in custody of police constable Robinson, on remand from the previous Tuesday, charged with committing a rape on Charlotte Coster, a girl, 12 years of age. The case was heard behind closed doors, and the prisoner was committed for trial to the next Hertfordshire Assizes. Bail refused. ''

I am rather surprised it was behind closed doors. It must have been because a child was involved. Rather forward thinking for the time. It appears that in 1870 the age of consent was 12, so he cant have been charged with underage sex. One does wonder whether it was rape or he was accused when the father found out. Anyway, I believe he got either four or seven years, which is a relatively light sentence, but will recheck. I cant help but feel it ruined his life as later on, if its the same fellow, he is back in trouble again. ::)
