Hi Mike

I think this stone might be for the family of a James Porteous and Margaret Nicol. Their children showing on IGI, all births in Edinburgh:

1. James b. 21 Sept 1856
2. William b. 28 Feb 1858
3. Helen  b. 27 Sept 1859
4. Louisa b. 22 Jan 1863
5. George b. 30 Sept 1864
6. Ninian b. 28 Oct 1865
7. Louis b. 31 Dec 1866
8. Maggie b. 10 March 1868
9. Benjamin b. 22 Jan 1870

James Porteous looks to have married Margaret Nicol on 16 Nov. 1855 in Edinburgh Parish. The family's 1871 census entry to give you some background on them:

James Porteous 38, Spirit Merchant b. Edinr, Colinton
Margaret Porteous 38 b. Thurso, Caithness
James Porteous 14
Thomas Porteous   9
George Porteous 6
Maggie Porteous 3
Benjamin Porteous 1
Benjamin Nicol 20, brother in law, draper b. Florence (?spl), Caithness

Address: 104 Rose St, Edinburgh

There is an Inventory entry in the Wills & Testament section of Scotlands People:

James Porteous, 14/12/1871. Spirit Dealer of Rose Street Edinburgh. Inventory. Edinburgh Sheriff Court Inventories.

Is Fred in anyway connected to coal miners?  I have several Porteous families on my partners tree.
Ireland, Co Antrim: Kerr; Hollinger; Forsythe; Moore
Ireland, Co Louth: Carson; Leslie
Ireland, Co Kerry: Ferris
Scotland, Perthshire/Glasgow:  Stewart
England, Devon/Cornwall: Ferris, Gasser/Jasser/Jesser, Norman

Looks like it could be St. Cuthbert's Church at the West End.

Cheers.

Archie.
