I'm a tad confused about the - John & Esther M.S. McPherson so have stuck with Sutherland as surname.

A John SUTHERLAND B: 1780 in Latheron Caithness  married an Esther SUTHERLAND b: 1788 in Dunbeath, Caithness. They had:
Hugh SUTHERLAND b: 1811 in Dunbeath, Caithness
William SUTHERLAND b: 1807 in Latheron Caithness
Robert SUTHERLAND b: 1809 in Latheron Caithness
James SUTHERLAND b: 1815 in Latheron Caithness
Janet SUTHERLAND b: 1815 in Latheron Caithness
Ann SUTHERLAND b: 1817 in Latheron Caithness
George SUTHERLAND b: 1821 in Latheron Caithness
Alexander SUTHERLAND b: 1823 in Latheron Caithness

Is this the right family? Latheron and Dunbeath are near Berriedale.

Ayrshire: Craig, Orr.

Gordy you're going to have to clarify your posts a bit more. I'm related to Esther Sutherland (who married John Sutherland) through her father, Neil Sutherland. You've posted the names of children that conflict with James' post so are we talking about the same family? I'm tempted to think not because of the children's names and also because my Esther is buried in Latheron, not Berriedale. Please respond.

Dear ostler
I have searched Scotland’s people for most of my info and I followed back through my great grandfather David Sutherland he was Born 14th Feb 1890 died 1951.
His Father Alexander was Born July 9th 1864 in the Parish of Wick he died 2nd 1910
In the Parish of Wemyss Fife.
Alexander’s father was David he was Born 1841 in the Parish of Halkirk and died in
1915 July 21st Parish of Dalmeny his brother & sisters were Helen b 1832 /John b 1833 /Elizabeth   b 1835 / Esther  b 1837 / Alexander b 1841 /Johan b 1845 /Margaret b 1847/ another  John b 1849? Was it common to have children and give them same names.
David’s register of death certificate his father was Alexander he was a Crofter & his wife was Catherine M.S.Henderson.
Alexander was Born 1811/12 Latheron & died 1882 Dec 7th at Todholes near Thurso
On his register of death his father was John  & his wife was Esther M.S. Sutherland
So this is the confusing bit I found John and Esther in the 1841(Berriedale) census age 56 & 55
Then found death register for  Esther 1855  which told me her M.S was Sutherland so I thought that was them now you tell me your related to another Esther with a M.S Sutherland so I can be wrong again.

I hope this info may help you to tell me if I am linked to your family,
Confused  Gordy (Thanks for getting in Touch)

There can be multiple children with the same name if some died in infancy.

Looking at my records, I have a John Sutherland (farmer/tailor) born c1786 who married Esther Sutherland born c1783, died 1855. Their children are:

William
William (born c1807)
Robert (born c1809)
Hugh (born 1813)
James (born 1816)
Janet (born 1817)
Anne (born 1819)
George (born 1821)
Alexander (born c1823)

The only further generations I have are from Hugh, who married Barbara Gunn. It is very possible this is the same family, but I think we both need to do a bit more research.

Hello, I have been researching my Sutherland ancestors and have been stuck at John and Esther Sutherland also. My John and Esther are the same family you listed with six children; Catherine, Andrew, Elizabeth, Alexander, Ann and Isabella. I found your post and wondered if you were ever able to find John's Father? I found a possible father, James Sutherland who married Isabel Piery, but have not been able to confirm a connection.

Thank you for any information you can share,
L. Sutherland
