Bilcor1 & Nimjim, a couple of things that may help.

Births of children:
Robert McGerl  1 May 1828 Rathven
 f. Robert  m.Hannah Doherty

James McGerl  31 March 1830 Rathven
f. Robert  m.Hannah Doherty

Marquis(?) McGerl  27 August 1832 Rathven
f. Robert McGerl  m.Hannah Doherty

John  McGerl  28 January 1835 Rathven
 f. Robert  m.Hannah Doherty

Deaths:
Hannah McGarrol
died: 1867  Rathven
mom maiden name:McGaunigal

Robert McGarrol
superannuated coastguard man
died: 6 Sept 1858 Buckie, Banffshire
age: 66 yrs
F. James McGarrol (dec)
M.Mary Carney
informant:James McGarrol  son  present

from 1841 census Robert & Hannah had following children: Elizabeth, Margaret, Mary, Robert, James, Marbus (mistranscribed?), John, Hannah, &Susanna

In Tithe Applotment books McGarrol appears in Ballynaloob, co Antrim. Also some wills for McGarrols appear to focus on Deerpark, Glanavy,co Antrm area.
As for Docherty, Michael Docherty appears in Aughtertin, Manorcunningham,Glencar & Ballybofey areas in co Donegal which makes sense as Docherty,Doherty & other spellings very common in Donegal although some records for that name can appear in counties Derry &Tyrone depending on Donegal parish people resided in.Another thing is that the surname McGaunical (which I believe may be misspelling of McGonical/McGonigal)is also found in co Donegal.May be worth seeing if any parish records go back that far as well as looking at wills & civil registrations.Funny I came across this marriage of Michael Doherty father:Michael Doherty marrying Madge McMonagle(?) On 24 Sept 1865 Aughtertin,co Donegal. Hope something helps, Kim

Hi Kim,

That's really kind of you - thank you so much!  The different variations of the name McGarroll is definitely a challenge.  I've seen Megerl ( a brilliant phonetic example!), McGill, M'Garroll, McGarrell, McCarroll.

Can I ask where you found the info on the Irish records please?  There definitely looks like there are some leads I could follow up there.  Many thanks, Nancy
