Found a site to give the original registration location of old uk plates.

If I am reading this correctly as MED 870, then...

MED 870 - When was it Issued?
This registration was first made available in 1954.The original office for this letter combination is Warrington C.B.C.

What is the plate?

Just looked at all the churches in Skirlaugh (courtesy of
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/ERY/Swine/index.html)

and there's no obvious match.   Might be a nearby town therefore.

I get back from working night shift and log in to see if we have identified the plate on the car and...nothing!

What happened, were you all asleep while I worked?!!!!

Ok let's be serious.

Can anyone make out the registration plate on the car in the foreground

If we have the correct letters/numbers we can identify where the car is from.  Then we just have to hope it is a local car and not Aunt Ann on holiday from somewhere!

Get out the magnifying glasses what does the plate say?

Looks to me like the registration ends in a "C" - new about 1965. It looks like my old Morris 1100!

A couple of non-car thoughts.

The houses and the chapel look clean - probably that pebbles and concrete mix. This suggests a non-industrial area. The steeple is dark - which may be a red sandstone?

Given the shadow the picture looks to have been taken around midday either north-south or south-north. The B road on the sign then heads either east or west to start with. The unclassified road opposite might be a clue, though I can't see much - maybe ends ...Manor?

After much eye exercise, I believe that the car plate might read:
I- L 0 570
and if I cross my eyes just so, the street sign numbers may be: 1243 or 3243

It looks like there's something hanging on the outside of the church between the two windows.  Is there some writing on it or are my eyes deceiving me?

I think Al's right - a board of some description: but if we can't make out the roadsign, what's our chance of reading that board?
