Photographic plate - any ideas ?
« on: Tuesday 26 April 05 09:23 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I have amongst my grandmas old photos a glass photographic plate with a really smashing image of a smart gent on it.  I don't know who this is, but I reckon it's the oldest picture I've got and Id love to get it printed up.  Then I can get some advice on date etc.,

Any advice, bear in mind I am a complete novice and can't do any of the clever things most of the fellows on this board can do ?

Hi Siouxzie,
Well this is totally out of my league, you might want to read the link below. Basicaly what their saying is take it to an expert photographic shop. It may cost a little bit but it's better than ruining the photo.

Thanks Deadants,
reading your links, was a little scary -  guess I will just have to find me a professional that doesn't want to charge the earth.

Hi Siouxzie,
Please keep us informed on how this exercise goes. I would be extremely interested in seeing the image once you have it scanned. You've got me intrigued now.

This is a link to an explanation of how around 2000 glass photographic plates are being scanned and put on the web.

The plates scanned so far.

Siouxzie,

Your local Photography club will have people falling over to help you develop a print from that - if you are anywhere near us (Bury, Lancs) then I can print it for you.

I would strongly recommend that you don't post anywhere it unless you pack it very very securely sandwiched in thick slabs of expanded polystyrene.

You can usually get details of local photography clubs from your friendly librarian. :)

Thanks for that Trystan,
Unfortunately, we are Staffordshire, so I can't avail myself of your kind offer,.  But will definitely look into the photographic club idea locally.
