DEATH NOTICE OR OBIT CAPE BRETON
« on: Sunday 15 May 11 05:13 BST (UK) »
I wonder if there is any kind person in Sydney Cape Breton who could search the old newspapaers or death records for a Jean McEwan died Christmas day 1930 and her husband James Alexander McEwan who died the previous year. I am sorry but don't have the day or month
Also wondering if any body knows of Archibald Robertson Morrison who also lived in Cape Breton in the early 20th C
mother Marion father Alexander. They may have moved to Detroit but were there in 1916 and before. Any help would be much apreciated no matter how little

Perhaps you could find their death certificates here-

I assume you know they were in Cape Breton in 1916 from Archibald's Attestation Papers which indicate Archibald was born 9 Sep 1897 in Scotland.

The only Archibald R Morrisons in Detroit that I could find on the 1930 US census were either too old or too young and not born in Scotland. I didn't see any other possibles using variations of Archibald either. I also couldn't find any border crossing documents that fit either.

At the link aghadowey provided there is a marriage for Archibald Morrison to Mural McLeod (it was mistranscribed in the database - the original image says Muriel) in 1925 in Cape Breton.

Jacquie
Canada: Patterson, Brown, Haidenger/Heidinger, Meyer, Johnston(e), Gorsuch, Kitchin/Kitchen
United States: Patterson, Smith, Brown, Vance, Bower(s), Newberry, Best, Love, Gorsuch
England (Northumberland): Brown, Whitfield, Henderson
Scotland (Glasgow, Edinburgh, Fife, East Lothian): Johnston(e), Bell, Galloway, Campbell, Robertson, Williamson, Thomson, Crawford
Germans from Russia: Haidenger/Heidinger, Meyer, Meach, Lorenz

Thank you both, Aghadowey for the link, I have tried that for my McEwans but there is nothing there unfortunately and Jaquie that Archibald and Muriel in 1925 are mine so thank you for that and for searching in Detroit, much appreciated/

If you can't find the McEwans in N.S. vital records it's likely the surname has a different spelling so try doing searches with minimum details.

Hi again...yes I did try all versions of McEwan on that site but nothing comes up at all unfortunately.
I know they were buried in Brookside Cemetery but it seems they have not been properly registered but thanks fo rthe suggestion. It is quite frustrating

Did you try searching with surname as beginning with 'M', etc.? Also, 'Jean' might be listed as Jeanie, Jane, etc. so try beginning with 'J'.

www.capebretongenweb.com/
the transcription of the headstone is on this site and you may find something on here that may help. Just in case you aren't aware, Brookside cemetery is actually in Sydney Mines and not Sydney.
The headstone reads
Side 1
In Loving Memory of
Jean, wife of James A. McEwan
Died Dec 25, 1930
"At Rest"
Side 2
In Memory Of
James A McEwan
1860-1929
Although, they are buried in this cemetery, they may not have died in Nova Scotia or there weren't registered.

On the 1911 Census of Canada, they are in
District 39, Cape Breton, North Victoria, #2 of District 4, Polling district of Little Bras D'or
Page 16, household 52
James McEwen, male, District 4, married, March 1861, Scotland, age 49, occupation - miner
page 17
Jennie, District 4, female, wife, married, occupation- none, b. Nov 1861, Scotland, age 49, Presbyterian
Christena, female, daughter, single, May 1902, age 9, Scotland
James, male, son, b. May 1904, age 7, Canada
James Currie, boarder, miner
Thomas Cockburn, boarder, moulder

with Christena born in Scotland and James in Canada, it narrows the immigration to 1902-1904
