Married or not?
« on: Thursday 19 May 11 16:59 BST (UK) »
Please can someone tell me if a marriage which definitely took place is ever known to be left out of the GRO.  The date would be sometime between 1917 and 1923.

It is a matter of great discussion at the moment in my extended family and I am unable to mention names, however my inclination is that the couple were not married but falsified their child's birth certificate in 1918 saying they were.
The "husband" was married to someone else according to the 1911 census (checked)  and died in 1923.  Legal wife re-married in 1924.

Thoughts please?

NC.

I have my Grandmothers birth certificate which clearly states that her Mother and Father were married, when in fact, they didn't marry for another 6 years.

I dont think that birth certs state if the parents are married or not.
The mother may give her name as the same as the father, but that does not mean she is married, just that she is known by that name.

The fact that a mother's name, on a birth certificate is given as, eg. Mary Smith formerly Jones, and the father's name as John Smith, is not proof that they were married, or even proof that the registrar was told that they were married. The registrar would not have asked that question.

Bear in mind that it may be different in different countries.

I have found out that my mother never married who we thought was her first husband, I search for months and could find no marriage record for them, but I did find a marriage for the man we thought was her husband, he had left his wife and child and eloped with my mother, she even had photo's saying it was when they were on there honeymoon in 1929,when my half brother was born in 1936 and he was registered as there child taking his fathers name, when she married my dad she used her pretend married name, so I think that the information given was accepted with no questions asked, you open Pandora's Box and have to accepted whats in there.

We have one of our lot where every record indicates that they were married - census's- all entries through their lives together- birth certificate of their children states her maiden name and married name, her death certificate. We cannot locate anywhere a marriage entry, even with the help of rootschat friends! So all we can conclude is they never actually got round to doing the deed!!

I should think it's slightly more likely that the record has been lost or not transcribed

Just because you can't find it now, doesn't mean it doesn't (or never) exists   :)

Thank you very much everyone for your interest and helpful answers.  There is a lot for us to think about and it seems that a can of worms has been opened.  No-one is upset though as what is done is done.
