Lt Charles COX: 39th Regiment of Foot
« on: Saturday 21 May 11 06:50 BST (UK) »
Dear listers

I would appreciate some help in compiling a Record of Service for Lt Charles COX who served in the 39th Regiment of Foot (the Devonshire Regiment) from around 1809, when he was appointed Ensign, until his death in 1833 in Madras.

I have found a couple of mentions of him in the London Gazette, but I don't know how to go about creating a chronology of his service.

Based on some references to the Peninsular War (http://www.napoleon-series.org/military/organization/Britain/Infantry/WellingtonsRegiments/c_39thFoot.html), it appears that he was was wounded in action at least three times; in 1816 quite seriously.  It also looks as if he served in Australia for a time and may have been a Justice of the Peace on Norfolk Island.

Could someone who knows what sources are available please help me to reconstruct his movements around the world leading up to his untimely death in Madras, I believe as a result of Cholera?

I would really appreciate some expert help with this inquiry.

Kind regards

Philip Candy

Many thanks for this Trevor.

I have now written to the Museum to see if they have any resources relating to the period I am interested in. I have also found a thread on Rootschat devoted to the 39th Regiment, and have left a post there.

Kind regards

Philip Candy

Hi Phil :)
I came across your post searching for information (university study related, not family history) on Lieutenant Charles Cox of Norfolk. I am researching duelling in the colony and looking for information on Cox's apparent challenge to his superior Capt. T. Edward Wright in 1828. Cox was called as a witness in Wright's 1827 trial for the murder of prisoner Patrick Clinch/Clynch but I can find nothing pertaining to the direct challenge or any subsequent duel itself. I note you mentioned that Cox faced a court martial? Would you be able to direct me to the source which mentions that? I'm wondering if that was related to the challenge or whether the challenge was a result of the trial or Wright's handling of prisoners which Cox didn't seem to abide.
Many thanks for your time and kind regards,
Mel

Seen this reference?  https://goo.gl/hL86Gq

It seems possible that he was immediately arrested for challenging his superior officer to a duel, and that no duel took place.

And this might help as it gives a complete timeline for the Regt up to the cholera outbreak in Madras in 1833.
