Bean from Tadcaster, early 1800s
« on: Sunday 22 May 11 04:06 BST (UK) »
For some time I've searched for information about my gg-grandfather George Bean's parents without much success. In particular, both parents are reputed to have died at (or near) the same time around 1831. The information I have is as follows:

Richard Bean, born ca 1788 Tadcaster, flour miller
x Elizabeth Dawes, ca 1792 Tadcaster
   - Jane
   - Abraham
   - Richard
   - George, 5/7/1822 Tadcaster
   - Charles, ca 1825
   - Josiah, 24/7/1829 Stutton

Later stories, passed down via George's daughter Minnie, relate that George came to the Victorian goldfields via a Canadian flour mill. He purchased some land in or near New York city but passed that onto his brother Abraham. The family in Australia lost touch with Abraham, but Charles and Josiah joined George in Victoria.

If anyone has any information about George's parents or further ancestors I would be very happy to have anything they can pass on. It would also be great if anyone knows what happened to Jane, Abraham or Richard.

Cheers

Bill

I cant find a JANE
There is a WILLIAM Bean born c 1821 living in Tadcaster in 1841. He is a Blacksmith Apprentice.
CHARLES Bean c 1826 in Tadcaster, Shoe Makers Apprentice.

I did notice on Josiahs Australian Death Record his Mother is down as Elizth DAVIES not Dawes but this may be a mistake depending on who informed on his Death.

I am also looking for Richard & Elizabeth Bean (nee Dawes).I am a descendent of Georges brother Josiah who came out in the Earl of Charlemont shipwrecked at Barwon Heads in 1853. There are many Richard Beans but I don't know how to work out which is the right one! Any ideas billnkempsey?

Hello Bill,
I would be happy for the Webmaster to give you my e-mail address. Why not ask? We went to the 150th Anniversary of The Earl of Charlemont shipwreck. Divers have made a display of treasures from the wreck and I was given a nail from it! The anchor is outside the Barwon heads pub and the bell is in the Anglican church. We also visited the cairn on the Bluff. My grandfather (H.J.B) donated leadlight windows which we saw in the Church. I have the Josiah Bean centennial booklet which Herbert originally collated but died before the occasion. Herbert's brother Leslie took over the rest of the proceedings. I actually have a copy of the plan of the seating at the A.B.C. cafe for the luncheon.
Unfortunately Barwon Heads website says Josiah died but it was another passenger who had a heart attack. How could Josiah's descendents have put a cairn there - someone wasn't thinking straight!!
My research has shown some incorrect facts in that memoir including that Charles died childless. Charles married Mary Ann and had two children George Josiah who died at 3 yrs and Jane Sarah who died close to 17th Sept.1943 as reported in the Argus. I don't have her birthdate but she obviously did not marry. My husband and I searched the East Geelong cemetary where we found Charles, Mary Ann and George buried together. Obviously Jane Sarah was named after Charles sister Jane who apparently brought up the younger members of the family after their parents died. I am also stuck with Richard & Elizabeth perhaps seeing their Graves would be the only clue to their birthdates. I have been to Tadcaster but it was a Sunday and it was mostly closed. I haven't been able to track down Jane or Abraham either. Any clues?
I have an extensive family tree done by Ann Marum in W.A. but I haven't found the link with you, was that through Minnie? I have found Mary Cameron though - I'll have to read it again.
Regards,
Debbie.

Bill,
I was reading the family tree when I came across a note about George's place on the gold fields at Miners Rest .His tent had green biase lining (whatever that is?) and wooden floors and when another child came along he just added another tent!
I've found Minnie on the tree but you'll have to tell me where you fit in.
Regards,

Debbie.

Hi Deborah Ann,

Have sent you a private message with my email.

I connect back to George via his fifth child Alice Maria. Minnie was his eighth and last child.

Cheers
