When did he immigrate?  Does the letter have a date? 

Do you have a middle name/initial for him?  Do you know where he was born/from in Ireland?

My grandmother told me he just missed the Titanic. So circa 1912 ! The letter is dated 1955, so not very resent!

Considering the time frame and assuming he sailed to New York, you could try checking the passenger lists at www.ellisisland.org (available with a free registration).  There seem to be a few James Quinns of the right age, but without further info on his place of birth or relatives' names, I can't be sure if any of them might be your guy.
