Yew Tree Cemetery Liverpool Look Up
« on: Wednesday 25 May 11 18:18 BST (UK) »
Hi

Can someone please look up a burial that happened 29 Nov 1917 for a 10 year old boy John Barrow.

I am asking on behalf of a friend who has come across a burial card, but not sure who this child is. Possibilty it could be an uncle, who was never mentioned.

A grave ref, and anymore more detail would be great. Is there anywere we could find out who else is in the grave and if there is a headstone.

Many thanks in advance.

The death reg shows him as 9yrs old so b 1908

Freebmd only has one John Barrow birth in 1908 in Liverpool so you should be able to find him on the 1911 census to check

Have you contacted Yew Tree to see if they can give you the information?

I found the following info on another message board but it may be of interest to you.  Here's the link as you may want to read some of the other comments about the state of the cemetary

For anyone looking for Yew Tree burial records they are available here:-

http://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=2183

Both Ford Cemetery and Yew Tree Cemetery have "public" and "private" graves. The public graves were not pauper graves they were paid for as single interments whereas private graves are family plots. Sections for public graves are usually unmarked grassed areas. Sections for private graves are more likely to have a gravestone but many of them do not have them.

You will need a plan of the cemetery and the section letter and grave number to start off. Ancestry now has a lot of RC burial records for Liverpool so you are likely to find these details more easier now. It can be hard work finding the gravestones or burial place you are looking for at the cemetery. Just keep checking the backs of the gravestones in the cemetery for section letters and numbers and they should guide you to the graves you're looking for.

John was buried in grave 550 on 4.12.1917 and his address at death was 40 Beugel St.  If you look at other entries on the same page - you will find 3 others (all children) buried in grave 550 which suggests it was a paupers grave

It's a "public" grave not a pauper's grave ie a single interment. The parish would not have paid for the burial. Paupers' graves are paid for by the parish. Public grave burials at Ford and Yew Tree were paid for by the families of the deceased.

Well said :) My family were hard up but they were not paupers.

If there is no letters in front of the plot numbers this is also a hint that it is a "public" grave.

Paupers Graves were used, until the creation of local/municipal councils & cemetaries, for people who could not afford to be buried by their family - the names of people within these graves will be in the record books for the cemetary.
Public Graves are what paupers graves were subsequently called after local/municipal councils took over.

Perhaps Liverpool records office can confirm exactly which type of grave this was

This is a reliable source concerning the type of burials at Ford Cemetery. Remember that Ford and Yew Tree are Roman Catholic cemeteries they don't belong to the council:-

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~liverpoolindexes/facts.html

Note the following statement:-

"There were no pauper burials (ie burials paid for by the Parish authorities) in Ford".

Yew Tree also had both "public" and "private" type burials but no paupers' graves.
