Sheldon/Greenbough in Matlock, Derby

Hi

I am looking for the birthdates and family of William Sheldon and Susanna Greenbough who were married in Matlock, Derby September 15, 1784.

William Sheldon might be from Bonsail, as that is where the Sheldons were for a few generations. I have been on the LDS site but am confused with all the Williams!

Hello Jan,

I think that the IGI may have transcribed the surname of Susanna incorrectly, think it
should be GREENHOUGH.  Confirmation of this in on:-

When page opens click on Parish Registers, left hand side of page.
On next page scroll down to item 14 - Matlock Parish Registers.
By checking the names of both bride and groom you will see that at the time of
their marriage they were both resident in Matlock.

On the IGI the Bonsal Registers only commence in 1813, there is a CD available to purchase
of the Parish Registers:-

The information is about halfway down the page.

A further clue as to where William & Susanna were actually living is perhaps one of their
children who may have been recorded on a Census and state place of birth.

One of their children is Adam Sheldon b.c1822 in Bonsail, who married Martha?.  I don't know when they were married of what her maiden name is.  That's another mystery!

Opps wrong generation.  A child of William and Susanna is Adam Sheldon July 31, 1786,  born in Bonsail, and married  Dorothy Boden January 1, 1816 in Bonsail.

If you are taking the Bpt of the children of William and Susanna Sheldon from the IGI,
are you aware that these are Patron Submitted items and should be treated with
caution.  It is always best to examine the Parish Register and check the entries are
correct.

Yes, I am aware the IGI is only a second source.  Most of the time it is the only source I have to go by.  Thanks again.

Hello Jan,

I would not consider the majority of entries in IGI as a second source, as they are
actual transcripts of the Parish Registers.  It is only the items which have been
submitted by others that should be treated with caution, for example the Bpt of
the children of William Sheldon prior to about 1814.

It is possible to order ,via Latter Day Saints Family History Centres, a film of
the Parish Registers of Bonsall this will also give you burials which never appear
on the IGI.

Canada is a very large country, so perhaps you are not near to a centre, the

Just in case you are not aware, on the Personal Results page on the bottom left hand side, there
should be a batch number if the items are from actual registers commencing with:-
M = Marriage
C = Christening
J  = Male Christening
K = Female Christening
