1901 census of West Ham / Plaistow -  RG13/Piece: 1574 Folio: 171 Page: 25 - @ 26, Godsell Road

Frederick Sparks 32 Head of Household born West Ham, Plaistow: a Dock Labourer
Adeline Sparks 30 Wife London, Battersea (prob née GOODING)
Rose Sparks 11 dau born Plaistow
Lucy Sparks 7 dau Custom House
Adeline Sparks 5 dau Plaistow
Lizzie Sparks 3 dau Plaistow
May Sparks 1 dau Plaistow

Eliza Duffee 28 (Married) Sister born Plaistow
Eliza Duffee 7 Niece Custom House
George Duffee 2 Nephew Plaistow

Cant see a Sparks / Duffee marriage in the timeframe - might need to check the 1911 census.

Oh wait - Eliza is Adeline's sister - not Frederick Sparks' !

Marriages Sep 1889

ADAMS  Mary Ann    Bethnal Green  1c 360
DUFFEE  George     Bethnal Green  1c 360
Gooding  Eliza Louisa     Bethnal Green  1c 360
Kelvey  Daniel Whatley     Bethnal Green  1c 360

(I can confirm her middle name is Louisa from a later census, which again, sadly, George does not appear on ... )

All a bit odd - Adeline can be seen in the 1881 census (born in Battersea) but no sister other than a Rosie  ...

Then we see:-

1891 census of West Ham - RG12/Piece: 1326 Folio 46 Page 46 @ 37, Carlton Street

George Nuffer (sic) 22 Head born Poplar: Stoker at Gas works
Eliza Nuffer (sic) 20 Wife born Plaistow
Harriett Gooding 6 Sister born Shoreditch
Adaline ?miles 64 Widow Grandmother born Plaistow: Machinist
Rose Sparks 2 Niece born Plaistow
Frederick Sparks 23 Brother in Law born Plaistow: General Labourer
Adeline Sparks 22 Sister born Battersea: Laundress

Hi Mort29:

Thanks for all those census details.

Is it possible that this DUFFEE couple, that were listed in Familysearch, are Eliza's parents ?

James DUFFEE b. abt 1872 Plaistow, Essex

Sarah Amy DUFFEE b. abt 1876 Limehouse, London (m.s. HARRISON ? )

They are also in West Ham in the 1901.

Thanks again,

Bernard

Hallo Bernard - I dont think so - they have 2 sons with them in 1901, ages 4 & 2, so the Neice and Nephew we see, presumably with their mother wouldnt really fit, but who knows?

The only way to be sure is to obtain Eliza's Birth Certificate:-

Births Dec 1893

Duffe_  Eliza Rosie    W. Ham  4a 110

I was initially bemused how Adeline and Eliza were sisters - but, it does look like there were 2 Adelines born in Battersea, with this Family being the correct one ..

1881 - RG11/Piece: 495 Folio: 131 Page: 33 - St Leonard, Poplar

Charles Gooding 32 Head of Household born Surrey, Clapham: a Bricklayer
Adaline Gooding 29 Wife born Stepney: a Machinist
Elizabeth Gooding 12 dau born Essex, Forest Gate (near Plaistow)
Adeline Gooding 10 dau born Surrey, Battersea
Charles Gooding 7 son born Limehouse
Rose Gooding 7 months old dau born Bromley

It does look like your James is this George Duffee's brother. (Based on the 1881 census)

The Grandmother shown in the 1891 census is a mystery!

Hi Mort29:

Thanks for all your help and advice on this one.

Getting that birth certificate probably holds the key.

Thanks again,

Bernard
