Completed Thanks! Census look-up 1851/61/71

John Gollan bn 24 Feb 1814 to Donald and Helen (McKay) Gollan @ Kiltearn Ross & Cromarty.

John m Isabella Campbell 10 Nov 1837 @ Knockbain, Ross & Cromarty, they have Donald (who dies infant) in 1838, Isabella bn 1 Aug 1840 then a 15 year gap to John bn 14 April 1855! 

I really don't believe there are no children born in 14/15 years but SP isn't coming up with any.  Surely they had more?  They are on census 1841 Killearnan parish Ross & Cromarty and appear to be on subsequent census in the same parish.

They don't seem to have left the parish and apart from 1851 his age is consistent.  Does anyone have free access to 1851/61/71 census for this county/parish (before I spend a fortune yet again!  )?   I'd love to know if they had more children and possibly when they died and I'd really appreciate the help.

Hi there,

Have looked at the census 1861 they live at Spittal Shore John 47, Isabella 45, Donald 22, Isabella 20 and John 5.

1871 just John 57 and Isabella 57

1881 John on his own age 67

1891 John age 78 with his niece Ann Fraser age 54

Address remains the same .

Doesn't appear to be any other children.

Have you thought to check that 1855 birth for son John? 1855 birth certs should show how many children parents had up to that birth (boys/girls, alive/deceased).

Thanks!    That's amazing what a gap between children.  I managed to work out by a process of elimination that Isabella died in 1890 and John in 1896.  Good ages for them both in those days.

Just saw your post Monica.  Of course 1855 was the "special" year and yes I will "invest" in that birth and Isabella's death so I can take it further.  Not my direct line but a brother and even more remarkable when the brother (Wm) and his family died relatively young many with TB.

Just realised that Donald must have survived but is not the 1841 census.  Hmmm think I'll have to find out where he was! 

I must find out where Isabella was in 1881 too.  Maybe more rellies out there!

Just 1 boy and 1 girl both living and this is her 3 child on John's 1855 BC.  So I got nosey wondering why and found them on the 1851 census living with her mother and father aged 74 and 73, plus Ann Fraser grandchild/niece aged 16.

Best birth control going LOL ....... no wonder there were no more children till they were in their own place again! 

Considering I didn't know John existed before tonight, with your help this has been the quickest family I've ever "put together".

PS  Donald was with his grandparents on the 1841 census.
