A J HARMSWORTH and the Basingstoke Canal
« on: Monday 30 May 11 16:06 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to find out more about Alexander John HARMSWORTH, who owned the Basingstoke Canal from 1923 to 1937. His daughter Ivy Gladys married Charles Frederick DEEDMAN, a distant relative of mine. I'd be really grateful if anyone can give me any information about Alexander and his link to the canal - many thanks.

Have you checked the 1911 census entry for him?  The 1911 index shows he was b 1869 and was living in Farnham

It will show his occupation at that time

Hi Evie and many thanks for this. I used to have a similar page bookmarked but it was a freeserve site that's since vanished. Very many thanks for this link.

Hi Carole,
Many thanks for this. Unfortunately, I don't have access to the 1911 census (or any credits left) but I know they do 'freebies' from time to time, so I'll put it on my list to check.

Hi,
Not sure how long ago you were looking up this information.
A.J Harmsworth was my grans grandfather. The canal was passed down to her father and his brothers and they sold it to the council.
The canal has always been a place we visit frequently and I have a few books that my gran left me. Her pre married name was Vera Harmsworth. Let me know if you would like any more Info
