Great starting point, thanks again.
What info did you put in the Townland/Street box and the DED box? I can't seem to get into the census to search.
Any thoughts on searching local records? Newspapers? Civil records? Constabulary reports?

Here's the census search page- www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search

I did a variety of searches using first names, ages, county, religion etc. until I found Hannah Murphy, etc.

You should be able to prove (or in the negative disprove) the shooting of the child by going through the local papers

http://www.irishnewsarchive.com/index.php

Gives a spread of papers and if you take a days subscription, it should not break the bank

That sort of event at that time was very rare, and if it had taken place most certainly would have been reported in the press

I don't think the 'unknown male child' referred to in the first post was actually a child when the alledged shooting took place.

My point was not dependent upon the age of the person shot. I confess I had difficulty with the layout of the Original Post, knowing exactly what was being referred to.

If you know the surname (I assume Murphy) it helps, but a trawl for place (county or town), and shooting and/incident would throw up something if it happened. This was not 1920 it was 1910, and such shootings were happily rarer. The RIC were strictly disciplined at that time, and a shooting by police was out of the ordinary

Understand what you are saying but I did search earlier and only found 1 shooting at Ninemilehouse (not for a person named Murphy)- see reply #2.

Yes, I did read reply #2 of yours, but I did not realise that you had checked the Irish local papers as I was suggesting

I thought that it was only a general web search that you had done

I have been able to determine that Father's name was Michael Murphy and Mother's name was Hannah Fitzpatrick Murphy. Michael died prior to 1901 as he is not listed on the 1901 Census. The 1911 Census lists only Edward Murphy, Mary Murphy and John Murphy. I know that of the names listed on the 1901 Census, Patrick Murphy went to the US in 1908, Michael Murphy Jr. went to Britain about 1910 and Thomas Murphy went to the US in 1911. That leaves Peter Murphy b1892 and James Murphy b1894 as the possible unknown male. The incident I am looking for happpened sometime between 1901 and 1911.

I have just come back on Roots chat after years of being off it and was amazed to see this subject
This is my family,
I come from the Murphy side of the family, my grandfather was Michael Murphy b 1889
My ggrandmother did marry again to Edward O'Neill, but I am amazed about the above topic.
Please could you let me know anything about this and if it is correct.
Thank you
Julie
