Loughlin immigration to USA

Hello,

A long standing wish of mine is to find distant relatives living in the USA. The belief I have some American rellies stems from the tale that my Great-Grandfather PATRICK LOUGHLIN b. abt1861, Milltown, Co Galway - had a brother THOMAS who went to America while Patrick came over to Heywood in Lancashire.

All I know about Thomas is his name. I have been having doubts for some time that i'll ever find him but by chance the other day I was looking into American surnames. The site said there were roughly 3100 people in America with the surname LOUGHLIN.
Out of 350 Million thats not bad 

I've tried Ellis Island without much luck. Does anyone have any advice on how I might proceed?

As Ellis Island's records begin in 1892, he may have left before then.  This site - http://www.germanroots.com/onlinelists.html - has a list of what other passenger lists are online.

You would probably be best off trying to get as much information about him before he left Ireland, so you can narrow down his age and when he may have left.  Do you have Patrick's parents' names?

Is there a chance that he settled in Canada?  That would make the search even more difficult.
