Robert DAVEY & Elizabeth CREEDON
« on: Friday 03 June 11 07:56 BST (UK) »
Trying to find information on the family of Robert Davey DOB 1801 St Ewe & wife Elizabeth Creedon DOB 1811.

The couple had 9 children Stephen DOB 1830, John 1830, Edwin 1830, Samuel 1837, Elizabeth Ann 1839, Philip 1840, William 1844, Robert 1847 & James 1850. The family comes from St Austell & later Pentewan region Cornwall.

I am connected to Philip who immigrated to Australia 1878 and settled in the Charters Towers region 1880. Have had a lot of trouble finding any family links of Philip including his sibling or parents family background. Any help would be much appreciated.

Graham

Hi
It might be worth your looking more closely at the 1851 census as that will correct some of the dates of birth you have given and might help find the baptisms.

in reply to your question received by pm, Elizabeth's surname is Creeba on the marriage & baptism. Creedon doesn't occur very often in bmds in Cornwal - one marriage in 1861, a birth in 1951 & nothing on the IGI, whereas Creeba & variants does occur.
From "A Handbook of Cornish Surnames"
"Crebo/Creba - from crybow: crests, ridges..found in West Cornwall"

Where did the surname for Elizabeth come from?

Australian Death certificate of Philip Davey (son) of Robert and Elizabeth shows Elizabeth's surname as Creedon, Philip was born in St Austell Cornwall. When Philip was born his father Robert worked as a Civil Servant

Spellings changed frequently in those days so Creeba is well worth looking at.  No doubt a letter carrier was a civil servant - and it does sound much more prestigious!
Did you check the ages I gave you in the 1851 census?

Hi Graham,
Just a few questions/suggestions.

The Aust. Death Cert info is only as good as the informants knowledge of the deceased.
(I have one with Mothers name as nee Cooper, Cooper was his Fathers occp! and she was a Haigh after further research and Certs purchased)

Do you actually have Philips English Birth Cert?
Is that how you got the info his Father was a Civil Servant?
What is the info on Philips Marriage Cert?

Was Philip an Apprentice Blacksmith 1861 Census? If so he was born c 1842, St Austell which matches 1851 Census Andrea found.

Mistakes are made. Eleanor Augusta Davy (no e) christened 28 Jan 1866 is down as Helena A in 1871 Census.

I agree that Elizabeth is a Creeba.

Trish :)

birth registrations for some of the children born after the start of civil registration

Elizabeth Ann Davey dec qtr 1838 St Austell vol 9 pg 9
Philip Davy dec qtr 1840 St Austell vol 9 pg 5
Robert Davy june qtr 1845 St Austell vol 9 pg 3
James Davey sept qtr 1849 St Austell vol 9 pg 9

Philip is on the 1841 census enumerated as 8 months old, so 1851 census not entirely correct.
