Mark,
The info below is from one of the 40/50 Surname Indexes that cover Northumberland for Census 1851.
It was for "Glendale Part 2" covering the Wooler half of Glendale. ( Part 1 cover the Ford half of Glendale)
Part 2 reference is Piece 2422, folios 305-577.
The 10 below are all Rutherford, in alpha order..*
Agnes, wife, 50, born Scotland. Folio 467.
Alex., son, unmarried, 20, shepherd, b.Scotland. 467.
John, head, 57, husbandman, b.Eglingham. 466
John, head, 46, b.Allenton . 467
Isabella, dtr, u/m, 16, b.Elsdon. 467.
Mary, dtr, 5, b.Chatton 468.
Phillis W.Rutherford, wife, 51, b.Bilton. 466.
Richard, son, 8, scholar, b.Chatton,. 468.
Thomas, head, 42, b.Ellingham. 468.
William, son, 3, b.Chatton. 468.
I would normally sort these people into "sets" under each folio number, but I will let you do that yourself, as there are dangers here.
A folio has a front and back. John/Phillis could be on the front of folio 466. John/Agnes could be on the back of folio 467. Well apart from each other. But on the other hand, John/Phillis could be at the bottom of the back of 466 and Alex and/or Isabella could be on the top of the front of 467, with John/Agnes on back of 467, making Alex/Isabella part of John/Phillis and not of John/Agnes... just possibilities..
A look at the facsimiles of the census pages would resolve all. Well I was able to access the c3ensus pages, but there were amongst the worst I have seen. The only thing I could ascertain was that it was in the Chatton area.
Another problem with Surname Indexes is that they do not reveal other members of a household, who have a different surname to the head of h/h.
Exact science it isn't.. Go for it.
