Hey everone,

I'm currently researching my great grandad's activity in the Great War. Here is what I know so far:

+ Thomas George Stemman was born on 22nd October 1898 in Holborn, London.
+ Family are aware that he served in the army during the war, no specifics are known.
+ On ancestry he is mentioned only once. This is in the medal roll index.
+ The record states the following:

Regiment - Machine Gun Corps
Rank - Private
Regimental number - 119706
Medals awarded - British War Medal and Victory Medal
Medal roll reference - MGC/101B72 for both
Page number - 5822 for both

+ There is no mention as to theatre of war, enlistment date etc.
+ He survived the war and went on to life to a decent age.

I wonder if it would be possible for anyone to check the orginal medal rolls on their next visit to the archives in Kew? I would do this myself but I am currently working in a gold mine in Kazakhstan until mid August.

Also any other information/advice about my great grandfather would be greatly appreciated.

The Machine Gun Corps was created by Royal Warrant on October 14 followed by an Army Order on 22 October 1915.  [Extract from the Long, Long Trail website, where much useful info can be found.]
If your man has only the MGC on his medal card, he probably joined them direct, rather than by transfer from another unit.
The lack of a 'theatre of war' entry could mean that he served in the France and Flanders Theatre rather than the Middle East.
If you post on the Great War Forum there are experts there on most aspects, and the soldier's number may help to narrow down the date of enlistment etc.

Hi there, Thomas George Stemman is my Great Great Grandfather, me and my dad are doing our tree on history but im trying to find out as much information on our stemman side as i can!, Ive managed to find quite a few documents on ancestry milatry wise only a couple of the WW1 medal rolls index.
