Poulson family Liverpool
« on: Thursday 09 June 11 19:59 BST (UK) »
Have just come across references to this family.  I am descended from George Poulson and his second wife Mary Ann nee Hughes. (aka Marian).
The  first daughter of this marriage, Joanna, married John Henry James, a master mariner who died off  the coast of Nigeria. Their 2nd daughter Ellen Louisa married my gt. grandfather Charles Henry Thompson, an accountant in Manchester. George and Mary Ann had a number of daughters who all seem to have married - 4 in Newcastle - to Murray, Asquith Dobson, Weddell and Gilmour.

Another daughter Eliza married William Smith, a mariner and Elizabeth Ann managed to fit in 4 husbands over 10 years, Craggs, Davies, Cain and Sutherland.  His eldest daughter Alice by his first wife married a John Savage who worked for the Mersey Docks and Harbour board, as did their son.

There was a son by first marriage who appears to have died and another George who was baptised twice in Preston and L'pool.  Of him I can find no trace,  no apparent death anywhere.

George was a tobacconist (or tobacco manufacturer) in Jordan Street, and 51 Upper Harrington Street.  Also Simpson Street and New Hall Street..  In 1861 Census Mary Ann was to be found in Birmingham living with two girl lodgers and was described as a tobacconist.  No trace of George at that time altho' he is listed in directory.  He marries for a third time and dies in Amlwych, Anglesey.

Look forward to hearing from connections.

Hi,
Great to have your message.  Only discovered Rootschat last night and was so anxious to post a message that I did everything from memory.  I am still working out how to do it!

I have a lot of paper relating to these families accumulated over the years which I put to one side in order to concentrate on other branches and it will take a while to sort them out.  So please bear with me!

Anyway, 'my' Savage - John  (b.1821) who married Alice Poulson, was the son of Benjamin Savage and Hannah. Ben and Hannah had at least 10 children between 1817 and 1832, all except one bapt. at Liverpool St Peter.  There may have been more children and I probably found these on IGI some years ago when I first started on my tree.  So many more records have become available on line that I have started updating my Poulson/Savage link.  I can find no Herberts in that branch.

I had a long correspondence a while back with R Paul Higham who was related to the Savages and was distantly connected to mine.  Perhaps you have heard from him.  We did speak on phone and exchanged photos - he was living in Bahamas, I think and returned to England and family but I did not hear from him this Christmas.

I am delighted to get the date of George's first marriage and the surname of his first wife - Pickavance - a good name to research.

Will continue later.  Gabrielle

Back again!

Sorry to be misleading.  Joanna Poulson ( first daughter of George and Mary Ann ) married John Henry James, a mariner and they had four children, John Henry in 1850, Mary Elizabeth in 1851, Ellen Louisa (my gt. grandmother) in 1857. (  She married a Manchester accountant - Charles Henry Thompson. ) and Florence in 1859.  All born in Liverpool. I think Mary Ann P was born in Liverpool but I would need to dig up 1851/61 censuses.

Gabrielle.

The are many many  Mary Ann Hughes ...but.....this one looks a possible because of her fathers occupation
born 1st July 1802
babtised 7th november 1802 at St Paul  Liverpool
Mary Ann Hughes
daughter of Edward Hughes and Martha
fathers occupation  TOBACCONIST
abode Silkhouse Lane

might just be a coincidence...she would have been 25 when she married George Poulson....seems too much of a coincidence don`t you think ??

Thanks Allan,

As you say there are many Mary Ann Hughes -but that seems a possibility.  I have her down as b.1803 based on census but the fact her father was a tobacconist is interesting and it might be worth investigating the Hughes line.  George and Mary Ann's youngest child George was baptised twice, the first time in Preston where George seems to have been working temporarily as a publican.  He later becomes a tobacconist in New Hall St, and later in U. Harrington Street - I wonder if his father in law helps him with this.
Gabrielle.
