Tedford, Lyett/Lyat/Lyaught, Morrow, McGee/Magee, Prosser and more
« on: Sunday 12 June 11 03:30 BST (UK) »
I am interested in William Tedford, who married (Mary) Margaret McGee/ Magee in 1850 in Tartaraghan, Armagh and emigrated to Australia in 1855 on the Ramillies with 2 young daughters, Abigail and Mary. He was possibly born in Glencoe, Armagh. He died 1909 and was buried in Drayton cemetery, Toowoomba, Qld, Australia. Margaretís parents are listed in Qld bdm of her death in 1871 as Robert McGee and Jane Sloane.
Williamís death listing in Qld bdm in 1909 shows his parents as Thomas Tedford and Mary, but some secondary sources list his mother as Abby/ Abigail Lyett/ Lyat/ Lyaught.  After his arrival in Australia, he married Elizabeth nťe Prosser in Berrima NSW (possibly b Bridgwater, Gloucestershire, Eng, with parents possibly John Prosser and Elizabeth Poole) but previously married to George Seaniger, possibly with parents William and Hannah Goulding. She died 1899 in Glenvale, Australia and was buried in Drayton cemetery, Toowoomba Qld, Australia.
A Thomas Tedford came to Qld, Australia on the Golconda in 1865, 58y, with Shrah/ Sarah 54y and John, 12y. She died In 1899 75y in Qld with parents John Morrow and Mary and is listed as being born in Ireland.
Iíd love to know if Thomas Tedford married a Mary separately, Abigail Lyett and Sarah Morrow, or perhaps Mary Abigail Lyett then Sarah Morrow?  Who was Williamís mother?
Any information about any of these people would be greatly appreciated.

Hello. This is a bit frustrating for cousins in law to be communicating!!

Do you have any evidence of
William TEDFORD was born in 1831 (possibly in Glencoe, Armagh.)
Margaret MCGEE/TEDFORD was born in 1830.
William married Margaret in 1850 in Tartaraghan, Armagh, Ireland.

or can you suggest how I might look it up.
You might be amused if you knew who we suspected Esther could be!!

Hi
You have me very curious about Esther. Please let me know more, either here or by personal message.
I am not at all sure about William Tedfordís birth. I was hoping someone from Ireland might know more. What I have is:
Born: ≈ 1831 L ≈ 1830 U N GLENCOE, ARMAGH, Ireland RW from Ramillies 1855 25y b 1829 Ė 30 N, from bu 21.12.1909 85y b 1824 Ė 25 DT, so 1824 - 1831

These are the same is for Esther. The Ramillies record is primary, as itís online microfiche. The bdms and burials are pretty close to primary.
Iím now almost certain the Golconda Thomas was Williamís father. He is buried in the same grave as Williamís 2nd wife, Elizabeth. This matches with  a Qld bdm death with parents Nicholas Tedford and Nancy Gardner.
By the way, by the Qld bdm of Margaretís death, her parents were Robert McGee and Jane Sloane. I would love to know more about her too.
Griffiths valuation possibility for Thomas is:

Thereís an outside chance this could be William before he sailed: http://streetdirectories.proni.gov.uk/aetopia/WebObjects/StreetDirectories.woa/1/wo/tbxkw7pZIveH1RmhZpSWbg/10.0.0.1.5.7.7

Tedford, James, ship chandler and provision dealer, 29 Donegall quay; residence, 34 Chichester St
Telford, Wm., customhouse officer, 66 York street
Lurgan Ancestry may have more.
Also Robert McGee might be: Griffith Magee Robert Town Of Lurgan, North-Street Shankill Co. Armagh

Thanks again for all your input.

Esther gave birth to a son Stephen in 1878 when she was about 18. The father was Stephen Gavin, a English migrant. The son seems to adopted his father's surname & is my wife's grandfather. The birth place on the certificate is Billa Billa on the McIntyre River & so there has been some conjecture that Esther may have been an original inhabitant??. However your research has shown this not to be the case. I have one convict great great grandfather & there was some thought I may have had an Irish highwayman but this is unproven, drat!.
You do show Esther's birth as '1.   Esther TEDFORD was born on 18th February 1857 in WAMBO FOREST in Queensland.' I have searched all the BD&M sites & looked amongst the websites that you have provided but I can't find the source of the info. I know I am a scrounge but can you help here pls.
Toowoomba Council are going to photograph the Tedford headstones in the Toowoomba Drayton cemetery. Are you interested in a copy?

Hi
Thanks. This is fascinating. Iím happy to help with any questions. I love doing it. I only hope itís accurate enough. The information about Wambo Forest was from World Connect. To get to it again, I used http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/  I searched this time for Esther Tedford and 16 came up. That information is from the first one. It has much about the people we are interested in. It doesnít seem to give sources. It mentions your Stephen and what you know may be of great interest to the author. In the William Tedford entry, it mentions Estherís younger brothers as being born in Billa Billa, so all is not lost.
This site http://www.theycametheystayed.com/index.htm has long notes about Esther and her family. It lists the sources.
Iím very interested in those headstone photos. How much would they cost? Have you seen that on http://www.tddfhs.org/  on the projects page, that they have cards about those buried in the cemetery. Also, on the blog page they have indices to the Darling Downs Gazette. Tedford appears on the 1911 Ė 1915 index and there is a Telford on the 1906 to 10 index.
Itís interesting to think I could have very remote connection to an Irish highwayman!
