CLOSED WITH THANKS Barbara CHRISTIE (nee KERR) death 1948
« on: Sunday 12 June 11 13:22 BST (UK) »
Good evening from Adelaide, South Australia.

I am hoping that someone could advise me on how to search for death notices for Barbara CHRISTIE (nee KERR), a native of Leith b. 17 Jun 1901.

She married James Augustus CHRISTIE in Fremantle, Western Australia, in 1931.

She died in Perth, Western Australia, on 14 Mar 1948.

I believe that she was one of 13 children; one other, Beatrice, also lived in Western Australia. I have very little information about the rest of the family.

I have the Western Australian death notices, but am hoping that someone can find (or direct me to find) something in one of the Edinburgh papers that may have been placed by her Scottish family.  Thank you.

If she was from Leith, likelihood is that something would be placed in the Edinburgh Evening News  or The Scotsman newpapers. The Evening News has more death notices in general.

I know that the Scotman has a digital archive which you can search for free but to see the actual pages you need to pay. It is the sister paper of the Evening News but not sure if the News is covered by archive or not. There is a contact link on this pages so you could try getting in touch and asking.

The Central Library in George IV Bridge Edinburgh has archives of all the papers in Edinburgh at that time as there was also

another one which I believe was the  "Dispatch" . There is also a 24 /7  "Ask a librarian " give as much information as you can

and they will get back to you quite quickly.

Cheers .

Jessie

Jessie,

Thanks for your help; I used the 24/7 service and expecting an email soon. Fingers crossed!

Unė kthimi i papenduar,

Thanks for info here and also PM. I got so excited to see the PM that I replied to that before even reading your reply here so apologies for any confusion. I didn't know of the trade of caulker and must admit I always connected Glasgow with shipbuilding, so that's interesting to me.

Also, you say of the 1911 census '27 years married 9 children of whom 6 are alive'; can you provide any info re the other 3?

Thanks for noting the difference in Margaret's ages in census and in death.

Looks like the 13 or 14 children in the family must have been a myth ... As noted in my PM, Barbara was my grandmother so I would love to find some connections, especially for my mum.

Cheers, mate!

Jessie, thanks; I wanted to let you know that according to an email I received in response to a query directed via the 24/7 service, 'Edinburgh Libraries no longer accept questions referred to them via the Enquire service' (i.e. the 24/7 service). As a result, I emailed the Library direct about a week or so ago but haven't had a response as yet.

Now chasing another shadow; the sister of my grandmother. Beatrice KERR was born abt 1897 in Leith (as above, with thanks for the help I have already received). At some stage she came to Australia, and was married to Basil John HALLION (a doctor). Basil was from Fremantle, Western Australia, but studied at least part of his medical degree in Scotland, most likely Edinburgh.

I now think that they actually married in Scotland (again, most likely Edinburgh), as I can't find any record of their marriage in Western Australia.

Basil was born abt 1898 so he would have been 18 abt 1916. He and Beatrice must have been married sometime between 1916 and 1931 as that is the year my grandparents married and the Hallions were well married before then.

Can anyone assist me in finding these marriage details?

Thanks very much. Very cold and VERY windy here in Adelaide, South Australia tonight. Reminds me of my winter in Edinburgh!

Cheers
Macushla

Hi Macushla

Just from general searches on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk, the marriage between Basil and Beatrice looks to have been in 1923 in Edinburgh City. The image is available to view online.
