Hello Ross, I am in  Ireland. My grandmother was a Langrell.  If I could find John Langrells father's name I would know exactly which branch of the family your Edward Pierce belongs to.  All the Langrells  go back to Wicklow, Ireland where they can be found in 1700.  Their roots we believe were French Huguenots.

"Hello Ross, Do you know of any wedding between  Susan Hopkins and  John Langrell c.1835?   John died in 1852 Susan in 1862.  They left behind several young children.  One of the children was Edward Pierce Langrell who added the name Hopkins indicating he was looked after by a Hopkins family.  He emigrated to Manitoba where he was know as Edward Pierce Hopkins Langrell.  He  was a  member of the Plymouth Brethern. He must have been a follower of the Preacher  Henry Grattan Guinness  as he named one of his sons Henry Grattan Guinness.

There are several direct descendants of John and Susan who would love to find a marriage certificate but so far nothing has been found! Family notes tell us Susan was from Clonegall in Co. Carlow so the marriage is likely to be in that area or Wexford rather than Wicklow. We believe we have traced her family and her birth in 1809 - Carlow. She died in 1860 - Carlow.
Did any of your Hopkins in Canada come from Carlow? Having asked that another relative in S Dublin Co. married a Hopkins from Carlow who must have been living more in that area.  No doubt the cert is in some dusty cupboard which researchers have not yet been able to tackle, but the competency of Vicars records in that era leaves a lot to be desired.
Hoban, McNally, Stevenson, Langrell

Hi,
You can reply to me via this service as it has a chance of reaching others also.

First of all there was a large branch or several branches of Hopkins in and around Clonegal.

Nicholas Hopkins (c1723-1787) married a Sarah Brown and they had a daughter Susannah, probably around 1770

Re your Susannah Hopkins, c1809, of Clonegal.  I believe she was a daughter of another Susannah (c1773-1844), likely the daughter of Nich and Sarah, above. Susannah married a William Hopkins (c1768-1809).  This family lived at or near Clonegal in Carlow and were said to be 2nd cousins.  William, the father left his daughter Susannah 60 pounds in his will to be invested for her.   Some old handwritten notes about the family only mention 6 children...leaving out a Sarah who died young, and this Susanna. I therefore believe that Susanna also died young and is thus not the Susan who married John Langrell.

Can you explain your source for saying that "Susan", wife of Langrell, was born at Clonegal in about 1809 and also regarding her death in 1860?
