Jack, I've a vast amount of information on the Langrells.  My grandmother was a Langrell and I've been working on the tree for years. I believe  their origins were French  Hugeunot's but I cannot find when they came to Ireland. The earliest I have found is an Edward Langrell in Dublin in the 1600's then a Joseph in Wicklow early 1700's.

Thanks for all the information you supply.

Though there had been persecution of Huguenots in France in the 16th century, the big issue that forced large number to emigrate was the Edict of Fontainebleau in 1685, which revoked the Edict of Nantes (which had granted Protestants tolerance). Many Huguenots refugees arrived in Ireland from 1685 onwards. So, that perhaps might be the era when your ancestors arrived (if they were Huguenots).

According to a local Manitoba history and Canadian census records, Edward Pierce Langrell came to Canada around 1869, after attending Dublin University. He lived in Ontario where he moved around, teaching school in small communities. He was living in Port Arthur in 1882 when he married Mary Elizabeth Trevillion. He moved his family to Edmonton, Alberta for several years before moving to Woodlands, Manitoba around 1888. He was a pioneer in both locations, helping to shape communities as a farmer, teacher and local politician. He died in 1924 in Manitoba.
I'm not sure how many children were born in the family, but there were at least 4: John Edward (1886- ), Mary Amelia (1888-1894), Francis Trevillion (1890-1937) and Henry Grattan Guinness (1893-1979).

I love the fact he named one of his children Henry Grattan Guinness.

Henry Grattan Guinness was a well known preacher born in Dublin in 1835 He was the grandson of Arthur  Guinness.(Guinness Brewery).  Henry Grattan  Guinness had a huge following in 1870 he opened the East London Training Institute for missionaries.  Edward Pierce must have been on of his followers.

I am a descendant of the Langrell's in Wicklow. Ned, Bill and Mag were my Uncles and Aunt. My father Joe was the 7th son Of Isaac followed by Aunt Mag as the only daughter. The house in Market Square was the family home. Joe and James were the only ones who had children.
