i am wondering about this peter purves,,if you look at the census,,it seems all the adults have had thier ages rounded down by 5 years,,,which is what was supposed to happen in the 1841 census,,,this would make him b c1801,,,,and his job was a stonemason,,,,i was wondering about the death record mentioned where it stated his mother was "a mason"  could this be a mix up,,and the "a mason" actually refers to his profession,,,just a thought.. ;)

Thank you all for you surprisingly speedy and generous response.

I am particularly obliged to Sue for the marriage information. I did know when/where he was married but was  not aware that parent information wasn't listed. Obviously the witnesses where relatives of the bride.

Barbara died in child birth in the same year as their marriage, and I believe the baby (James) was sent to live with an aunt in Berwick. Peter then (allegedly) joined his brother, also James, in Tasmania where James was involved in building stone bridges. Peter came to Melbourne in 1842 and his son James joined him out here in 1852 at the age of 17. There is a Purves Rd here named for the family farm that was sold up during the depression.

Once again, thank you all for you interest.

Mike Purves
Melbourne Australia.

If his brother was in Australia then his line would be the same and should show the same parents?

Have you traced James death?

Nott sure if this is the baptism that Fifer found earlier (Reply #8)  but it's a possible if one discounts the info about his mother on the death record:

3 April 1803, Bunkle and Preston, Berwickshire
Peter Purves s/o James Purves and Elizabeth Waldie

Have you got a death entry for brother James?

The James (father/son) would fit with naming conventions
