Bedfordshire 1851 Lookup Shefford - STANTON and SMITH
« on: Friday 29 April 05 09:06 BST (UK) »
I would be very grateful for assistance with the 1851 Bedfordshire Census.

I have retrieved the following details from the Index:

Town: Shefford (Ref: HO 107/1753/2/15  Ed 15   folios 724-755)

Page 39

STANTON, Elizabeth  Age 25
STANTON, James Age 25
STANTON, Lucy Age 3
STANTON, Susan  Age 1

I am interested in any extra details that may be available from the actual return (In later returns James was a Baker, born Newport Pagnell, Bucks). I am particularly interested to know whether a street address or nearby landmark is given, as there is no identifiable address for this family in the 1861 Census.

Also

Pg 40

SMITH, James Age 53
SMITH, Elizabeth Age 53
and children
Ann age 11
Benjamin age 28
Isabella age 14
Mark age 9
Sarah age 16

Elizabeth Stanton is the daughter of James and Elizabeth Smith. Were the young couple living next door to Elizabeth's parents? (They were in 1861.) Are any other details given?

Thank you!

Hi Lynley,

Welcolm to Rootschat.

I have looked at the images for you, and they answer some of your points, but not all.

James Stanton is listed as a Journeyman Baker and the other details you give are the same. There is however no indication of a street address. The household schedule number is 141 but there are no landmarks listed at all apart from indicating where a house is unoccupied.

The details for James Smith are as indicated by you; in addition

James is a Labourer
Benjamin Ag Lab
Sarah Plaiter
Isabella Scholar
Ann Scholar
Mark Ag Lab

All born in Shefford apart from James who was born Northamptonshire Holland B...  (can't read)

The household schedule number is 144 so not directly adjacent to the Stantons

Cheers Rob
