1798 census Gamlingay
« on: Thursday 16 June 11 08:24 BST (UK) »
Hello Everyone,
Can anybody look up the 1798 census for Gamlingay and see what other information is there under the name of WOODHAM, please? I know a Woodham is mentioned on it. Many thanks.

http://www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/leisure/archives/catalogue/holdings/a_c/censusreturns.htm  describes it as a list of householders only. Genuki says "Land Tax: records were compiled afresh each year and contain the names of owners and occupiers in each parish, but usually there is no address or place name. These records reside in the Cambridge Record Office for the years 1798 (on microfilm), 1829-32, 1946-1948. "

Thanks, Bedfordshire Boy. If I bought the microfiche from Cambs Achives do you think it would tell me any more than this? If so, and I bought it, how do I 'play' it? I only have a laptop.

I read my microfiche using a 20x magnifying glass bought for a few euros on ebay. I haven't got space for a fiche reader.

Apart from the surname and possibly his christian name, I doubt if you'll learn much more.

Hi Jill,

As David has said there is very little information on this early census.

Wm Woodham is listed.

I will send you a pm

Selina

Hello Selina and David,
Thanks for offering to send a PM, Selina - I look forward to receiving it (especially as I have no idea what a PM is!!) And thanks for the 20x magnifying glass tip, David.

Hi Jill,

I sent you the pm (personal message) on the 16th.

Look at the top of this page, first line where it says "Welcome back Jill123, you have .... messages, .. are new"   Click on messages.  If you don't find my message let me know and I will send again.

You should have received an email to tell you that you had a new message, perhaps you are not set up for that, if not go into Profile, under Modify Profile click on Personal Message Options and then tick the boxes you require.

Selina
