John Douglas
« on: Friday 17 June 11 20:34 BST (UK) »
I am searching for the birth certificate of John Douglas.  According to the 1871 cenus he was born in Peebles in about 1863.  I have searched the Scotlands People website but cannot find any details of him.  His parents were Alexander Douglas and Mary Thomson and they married in 1863.  I have tried searching for John Thomspn just in case he was born before his parents married but still cannot find any trace of him.  I have found birth details of his brother Duncan who was born in 1864.

John himself married in 1888 to Maggie McLagan.  John's occupation is a Blacksmith.

If anyone has any ideas as to how i may be able to trace him I would be grateful.

A John Neilson Thomson was born in Peebles 8 April 1863, mother Mary Thomson.  Since Alexander and Mary did not marry until December 1863, might this be him?

Hi Nell

I thought about this but wouldn't his full names be shown on his marriage and death certificates?  They both only show John.

Not necessarily.  The information on a death certificate is only as good as that provided by the informant, who may not know everything.  And I don't think it was necessary to give your full name on marriage either.  If this is him, then he was already giving a different name to that on his birth certificate.

Ooh, was this the correct birth?  If so, glad to have been able to help.
