Rassa,New fawr
« on: Sunday 19 June 11 14:26 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I am trying to find out about  my great great grandfather.
On the 1911 census he is listed as being born in Rassa in brecon, and on his marriage certificate it says his residence is somewhere called New Fawr.
could someone tell me where  Rassa or New fawr would be?

At the time of the 1911 census he was living in dukestown in tredegar.

Thanks

Is that taken from the transcription of the census entry? There's a Rassau in Beaufort.

New fawr seems an unlikely mix of Welsh & English - big new what?.  What are the details of the man so we can look for him in 1901 or earlier?

Hi,
His name is william bevan.
his father was also called william bevan.
He was born in 1839.
He married margaret griffiths in 1864.
I'm trying to find out where he was born so that I can go further back.
On the 1881 census it says he was born in llangynidre
On the 1911 census it says that he was born in Rassa, brecon.
It  says on the 1911 census that two of his children where born in Dukestown in brecon.
On one of the censuses it said that his father was born in llangattock in 1792.

is this the family in 1851?

Rassa Houses, Bedwellty HO107/2448 folio 748 pg 34
WIlliam Bevan head mar 59 miner b. Breconshire, Llangattock
Ann wife 49 b. Monmouthshire, Abergavenny
William son miner 12 b. Breconshire, Llangunider
John son 6 b. Monmouthshire, Bedwellty
Jennet dau 8 b. Breconshire, Llangunider

This map isn't very clear, but it shows Llangynidr, Abergavenny, & Bedwellty

http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/place/place_page.jsp?p_id=6100

& this shows Rassau
http://www.british-towns.net/cy/level_4_display.asp?GetL3=16142

Do you have a birth cert for one of the children to confirm mother's maiden name? At that time, bmds should have been registered Crickhowell or Abergavenny for the Bedwellty birth.

That is william bevans father william bevan,it gets confusing when they've got the same names.
Thats interesting, rassa houses ties up with william bevan saying that he was born in rassa on the 1911 census.
I wonder where rassa houses where.
Thanks for the link to that website, what a great resource!,that should help a lot.

FreeBMD has 3 birth registrations for a William Bevan in Crickhowell, 1838/39

Also, Familysearch has a baptism for William Bevan 1838, parents Ann and William, in Llangynidr. However, it is a submitted rather than extracted record.

regards
