Army Regiments - census records - HELP
« on: Friday 29 April 05 17:52 BST (UK) »
Hi
I wonder if anyone can help me?

I have today found someone on the 1861 census, in Jersey.

He was in the army but it says unknown army detachment!

Would it be possible fo find out what regiment he was in?

The references for the census were

RG9/4406
folio 81 page 5
schedule 1
gsu number 543279

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Nicky

Hiya

You could try contacting the people from this website (below)  asking them what Regiments were there at the time of the 1861 census.
from there you could contact the Regiments and enquire wether or not your guy was in those Regiments

http://www.societe-jersiaise.org/

Hope this helps

Hi Nicky

Try this and get into the archives section

Fort Regent was the place all the regiments were stationed
My Granddad was in the South Lancs there but in 1890
Mike E on the Channel Islands board is very knowledgable -  I'm sure he would help you if he can.............. ::)

Nicky,

Heres something that might interest you, the Library in Guernsey sent me as my 4th Gt Grandfather was stationed there, and I wanted to know how long his regiment was there for.

British regiments in Channel islands.......Up until WW2 the Channel Islands were always garrisoned. Regiments were stationed there usually for periods of one to two years.

So you could try looking at the Islands 1871 census just to see if your guy is still there.
