Thanks Jan, well that certainly is interesting ! Unfortunately my friend knows nothing about his ancestors !!
I've found a Charlotte Davison in 1901 in what looks like a convent or something at Winlaton, I wonder where the others were ?
VERY intruiging !

Is that RG13   Piece: 4763   Folio: 106    Page:42
4, Skinnery, Winlaton

If so it is the house of Thomas Lee a coal miner, his wife and children. George Davison 20 and Charlotte Davison are boarders there.

Her brother George would  be the right age for it to be them.
The 1891 says Ann was married but I can't find an appropriate marriage but I have found an Ann Davison born 1862 Auckland.
What a puzzle this all is ......thanks for your help.

I can't find Ann or Sarah born in the USA in 1901. Perhaps Ann senior had died and the children didn't know they were born abroad.
It's odd why she must have gone to America between 1882 and 1886 and returned before 1890.

I can't see a birth for Charlotte in Bishop Auckland either, the only one that fits is

BMD lists a Charlotte Davison born Oct/Nov/Dec 1890 Auckland, which would be right as she was 7 months old at the time of the 1891 census

Sorry my fault, put the wrong search dates in.  :-[ :-[ :-[

It might be worth getting that certificate to see if her mother is given as married or single and if it names her father.

Re having children born USA I had a random child in one of my lot born America. Dad was a miner and it turned out that they had all gone over to America, presumably hadn't like it and returned within a year and this one child was born while they were out there. It was before I joined RC and other web sites helped me find their passage on passengers lists but I'm sure someone on here would be able to help.
