John McNEIL from SALTCOATS
« on: Thursday 23 June 11 19:44 BST (UK) »
Hello

I hope somebody can help me - I'm looking for family of John McNeil b1856 probably in Saltcoats, Ayrshire. He married Mary Elizabeth Fleetwood in Barnsley 20/11/1878 and his father is on the register as John McNeil,Game keeper.

I think he may have had a sister, Mary, who married somebody called Ewer, which is what led me to Saltcoats. She ended up in Leeds with John's widow Mary in 1901 aged 60.

Any information will be gratefully received as I'm stuck  :)

Stella

Well there is this interesting looking family from 1861 Scotland.  Perhaps not quite where you expected but still worth investigating I think!  Note the spelling of Macniel.

Reg #: 373
Reg dist:    Little Dunkeld
Civil parish: Little Dunkeld
County:    Perthshire
Address:    Milton Of Kinloch

Household consists of:

John Macniel age 42, head, b. Saltcoats, Ayrshire, Occ:  Game Keeper
Mary Macniel age 42, wife, b. Saltcoats, Ayrshire
William Macniel age 16, son, b. Dunoon, Argyleshire, Occ:  Under Game Keeper
Jane Macniel age 13, dau, b. Dunoon, Argyleshire, Scholar
John Macniel age 6, son, b. Dunoon, Argyleshire

You'll find the 1861 image indexed on SP as:
1861   MACNIEL   JOHN   LITTLE DUNKELD   PERTH

Jumping backward to 1851 the family is right there in Dunoon and John apparently has a big sister named Mary b. in Saltcoats about 1838.

Civil parish:    Dunoon and Kilmun
County:    Argyll
Address:    Steading

John Mcneil age 34
Mary Mcneil age 32
Mary Mcneil age 13
William Mcneil age 6
Jane Mcneil age 3

Does this fit with what you know of the family?

Best wishes
Jean

Jean

Thank you so much - John McNiel was spelt as McNiel on his marriage record and only later as McNeil. This is great, you've really helped me

The John McNeil, in the above census provided by Jean, was born 07/May/1854, to parents John McNeil, and Mary Jenkins, Parents marriage was 29/Aug/1835. Ardrossan/Ayr.

Other births to this couple were Margaret McNeil, born 31/Dec/1842. Dunoon,
William McNeil, born 26/March/1845. Dunoon, Jane McNeil, born 13/Aug/1847. Dunoon. the other childrens births i cannot find at the moment.

Possible birth for mother Mary Jenkins, is 17/Dec/1815. Ardrossan/Ayr. to parents John Jenkins, and Jean Kerr.

The parents John McNeil, and Mary Jenkins, certainly travelled around quite a bit. i think they ended up in the North of Scotland.

Regards,
Jonn.

Thanks for this, the information tallied with my ancestor Mary Ewer and I now have the 1901 Census info which I might never otherwise have discovered.
