Comte de Viry, alias Speed. In exile around 1790.
« on: Tuesday 28 June 11 20:53 BST (UK) »
For some years I have been trying to establish whether or not a link exists between Henry Speed (in my line) and the Compte F J M H de Viry, who was on the Isle of Man for a few years in the late 1700 and early 1800s.
My Henry Speed, states on several census records, that he was born 1790,  (Douglas) Isle of Man. He lived in Brighton, Sussex.

The Compte de Viry and his wife Augusta Montague, I am told, were in exile on the Island.  They took an alias name of Speed.
They had the following children, all named with a surname of Speed .  Most, if not all,  were born there.

Ann, bapt. 1803 Onchan,
Charles bapt. 1803, Malew,
Laura bapt 1802 St Mathews, Douglas, Isabella Eliza 1790,
Joseph Henry George 1792,
 George John Henry 1793,
 Carolina 1801
William Augustus 1805, baptised St Matthews, Douglas,
and possibly my ancestor Henry in about 1790.

I should love to know if any records exist, of their presence on the island.  I believe one of the daughters may have become a Nun.  Also if my Henry (who died in a workhouse) is related to this family. Were there any other Speeds on the Island at that time?

Kind regards
