Mapley/Maple/Maples in Cottesmore and Uppingham
« on: Thursday 30 June 11 00:36 BST (UK) »
Hi, I'm looking for details of a family called Mapley from Cottesmore, the name seems to have changed later to Maple, then Maples.

The line I've found so far is:
 - William Mapley & Mary Christian married 26 May 1712 in Cottesmore.
 - They had a child baptised William Mapley 13 May 1722 in Cottesmore.
 - This William married Elizabeth Tipler 30 Nov 1752 in Uppingham (his name was written William Maple).
 - William & Elizabeth had a child baptised Francis Mapley 11 Nov 1753 in Twyford, Leicestershire.
 - Francis was married 26 April 1784 at St Marys Nottingham to Elizabeth Sarson. His name was written Francis Maples, from Hungerton, Leics.

So if anyone has access to any records I'd be really interested if there is any more detail for the events above (eg fathers names, occupation etc), and are there any other Mapley/Maples events in Rutland (the name seems to be a rare one and all from this family).

Also is there a baptism for either William Mapley or Mary Christian in Cottesmore (or anywhere nearby) before 1696 (so they would be old enough to marry in 1712).

Thanks very much for any help  :)

Hi,

I have the transcribed parish records for 31 Rutland parishes here is what is on my records....

WILLIAM MAPLEY (& other spelling variations) Baptisms:

1 OCT 1655, WILLIAM MAPLE,  S/O,  FRANCIS/MARY,  LANGHAM
2 JUL 1688, WILLIAM  MAPLE,  S/O, WILLIAM/MARY,  PRESTON
25 DEC 1715, WILLIAM  MAPLEY,  S/O,  WILLIAM/MARY,   COTTESMORE
13 MAY 1722, WILLIAM  MAPLEY,  S/O,  WILLIAM/MARY,   COTTESMORE

Other MAPLEY (& other spelling variations) Baptisms:

18 DEC 1658, ELIZABETH MAPLE,  D/O,  FRANCIS/MARY, LANGHAM
30 NOV 1689, ELIZABETH  MAPLE,  D/O,  WILLIAM/MARY,  PRESTON
21 JUN  1691, FRANCIS  MAPLEY,  S/O,  WILLIAM/MARY,  PRESTON
9 AUG  1696, MARY MAPLEY,  D/O,  WILLIAM,  PRESTON
14 MAY 1699, ROSE MAPLEY,  D/O,  WILL,  PRESTON

1 JAN  1727/8 FRANCES  MAPLEY, D/O, WILLIAM/MARY,  COTTESMORE

I have had a look for baptisms for MARY CHRISTIAN & there are quite a few but most are later than yours, I did find the following one that seems to fit the dates you are after:

Baptism : 3 JUN 1696, MARY CHRISTIAN,  D/O,   JOHN/MARTHA,  (NOTES: OF BARROW), COTTESMORE

The other earlier baptisms (which I think are most likely too early) are:

12 SEP 1669, MARY CHRISTIAN,  D/O,  THOMAS/ANN,  (NOTES: OF BARROW), COTTESMORE
20 MAR 1663/4, MARY CHRISTIAN,  D/O,  THOMAS/KATHERINE, COTTESMORE

As I said there are quite a few more but they are from 1701 onwards.

Back with marriages soon....

Hi Jadzia, thanks so much for finding all those details for me!!!  :) I think you've got me 2 generations further back now, right to the William Maple baptised in 1655 in Langham, which is wonderful!

I found the web site for Langham village history which has all the parish registers for Langham and lots of other great records for the village, and it seems that the family called Maple or Mapley were called Mabley or Mablie in the early days at Langham. On the Langham web site I even found one reference for a Mabley in a will from 1389!!!

The burial for William Mapley in 1768 in Cottesmore is definitely the one, I have a copy of his will and he did die in 1768.

Where did you get the transcriptions for Rutland parishes from? Is it a CD I can buy somewhere? I think it would be worth me getting a copy with all the new leads to check out that you have given me!  :)

Also I wondered what are the earliest registers from Cottesmore that you have? I've seen a couple of web sites that give the starting date of the Cottesmore registers as 1655, which I'm not sure is right as it seems quite late? Does your transcription for Cottesmore begin in 1655, or are there any earlier records?

Thanks very much for all your help!  :)

Hi,

I’m very happy I was able to help,

I’ve added the Langham site it to my favourites list i’m sure it will prove very useful later on.

The CD’s I have cover the years 1655 – 1812 for Cottesmore (Baptism, Marriages & Burials) & 1560 – 1812 for Preston (Baptism, Marriages & Burials).

I’ll send you a PM

HI there - posting on the off-chance you'll see this, years later...

I am descended from Ann MAPLES, who m. William Blyth[e] at Uppingham, Rutland, both otp by Banns, in 1732 - I am wondering if we have any connection? I haven't located her baptism yet.

Thanks
