Hayes of Camberwell, Surrey
« on: Monday 04 July 11 03:28 BST (UK) »
Hoping someone may be able to assist me please.  My 2x great-grandmother was Johanna Margaret Hayes, daughter of Daniel and Mary Hayes, born 1863 in Camberwell, Surrey, England.  I have located the family on the 1871 Census, but have no information as to when Johanna came out to Australia or any information regarding Daniel or who Mary may be.  From the census, Daniel is around circa 1834 and Mary circa 1846 for their respective births.  Johanna went on to marry Frederick Wyncoll in South Australia in 1884.

Oh my gosh, that is them - and you have given me siblings for Johanna also!  That is fantastic, thank you so much.  I guess once we are back into Ireland it is more of a struggle now to get information, I'm struggling with other lines of my family in finding anything concrete!

Do you have Johanna's marriage certificate as that may confirm her father?

This is interesting there is a Johanna Hayes born 1865 Camberwell in the 1881 census, but she has parents Timothy and Mary (who were also born in Ireland) She also has a brother Denis

RG11; Piece: 695; Folio: 29; Page: 52;
58 Sultan St Camberwell

Timothy Hayes   50   Brick labourer    Ireland
Mary Hayes   49                            Ireland
Denis Hayes   21                            Camberwell
Johanna Hayes   16                    Camberwell

I wonder if this is the same family and Daniel is now calling himself Timothy?

If that is the same family Johanna must have emigrated between 1881 and 1884.

Thank you for the extra information, but I think that the first is correct.  From Johanna's marriage details, her father is Daniel and her wedding date in South Australia (Port Adelaide Registry Office) is 27 September 1884, age 21.

Hi all, not sure if you are able to assist further with this query - I have just found a newspaper article from the Trove website.

It is an enquiry from Johanna's (or Annie) sister Kate (Catherine?).  It states:

Wyncole (Annie) nee Hayes, went to Adelaide 1883, was in service Rundle Street and wrote following year saying that she had married.

Hoping that someone in England may be able to assist.  If I have located a potential birth of Johanna (known as Annie) Hayes, would this give me the name of the parents at all to confirm whether her father is Daniel or Timothy?
Volume 1D, Page 610, Reg'n Year 1865, Reg'n Quarter Jan-Mar, District Camberwell (or could this be for a completely different Johanna Hayes!?)
Ideally trying to confirm her father - marriage certificate definitely states Daniel - assuming no other family came to Australia with her as in 1910 there is a "Missing Friends" article in the Adelaide Advertiser.

You would need to order the birth registration, but that birth would agree with the 1871 census here.
