Margate Sailor
« on: Thursday 07 July 11 16:04 BST (UK) »
Hi

Can anyone help me find out about George Goodbun born abt 1793, Margate.

On his son's marriage banns he is listed as a sailor.
His son, George Blucher Goodbun 1820, married Charlotte Gardiner on 26 May 1842 at All Souls, Langham Place, Westminster.

How can I find out what sort of sailor he was.

Thanks
Carole  ;D

Hi Carole

wonder if this could be the George you are looking for:

In the 1841 census
HO107; Piece 684; Book: 10  Enumeration District: 12; Folio: 15; Page: 24
Wharfs in Augustus Street, Regents Park, St Pancras

Yes, I think that must be them in 1841 as in 1851 his wife, Sarah, is a widowed dressmaker (born Exeter, Devon) living in Mary Street, St Pancras, with daughter Emma, 17, who was born in Margate.

Hi Dazey

Yes, I saw the 1841 census but I am not sure if it is the same George Goodbun because the one I have born abt 1793 had a son George Blucher Goodbun born 1820, Margate and he and his wife Charlotte in turn had a son George Blucher dob 1843, Pancras London a year after they married.

Also for reasoning's sake, George snr wouldn't have another son called George when his other one is still alive or would he!!!  So confusing ha ha.  ???

The fact that he is a barge stearer means that he is a man of the water so that fits with being a sailor on the son's marriage banns.

What I would really like to find out is his sailor life when he was living in Margate.  Did he work on the steamships and are there records or was he in the navy, which I think is less likely  ???

What do you think?

Thanks for your help.

The 1 yr old George Goodbun in 1841 might not have been a son - but, rather, a grandson?
There's a marriage in 1859 Camden of a George Goodbun to an Ann Eliza Willis.  George age 19 - father Thomas Pickaby/Piching(? - hard to decipher) a porter.

Yes, I also thoought that maybe it could be a grandson but George Blucher and Charlotte married in 1842 and their son George Blucher 1943 was born after the 1841 census. I have the marriage and birth records so the dates are good.

The only other thought is that it is a sibling's child.
Because I cannot find the census records I have not been able to find the siblings. :(

It is a confusing one  ???

I wonder if maybe he was Ann's son?  I can't find them in 1851 either!

This is a longshot..but a Caroline Goodbun married in 1849 and by a process of elimination it looks like she married Edward John Jobson..in 1851 they were living in the Regents Park area of St Pancras and she was born in Ostend (British Subject).  Margate to Ostend - looks like Post Office Steam Packets started running April 1827. :-\

In 1871 the Jobson's were in Scotland and Caroline's place of birth is given as Kent.
