Emmotts moved to Sweden
« on: Sunday 01 May 05 15:25 BST (UK) »
??? I received the following message from Peter Segrelius in Sweden. Can anybody supply any relevant information ?

Quote
" Hello! My name is Peter and I am from Sweden.  I have an ancestor with the name Thomas Emmott,  born 1769 in Colne, Lancashire, England. Married Nancy Hartley 1794,divorced  her a few years  later and moved to Sweden. Was married three times more here in Sweden. died  1856 in  Gammelgarden, Nederkalix.
Now I wonder if he also are an ancestor to you  maybe. I have searched the internet for his ancestors with no luck, but then I surfed in to your site.
Then I got some hope again, would be very grateful if you could help me with parents, relatives, some history about him, if he is your ancestor of course. I can help you if you want to know  anything about him of his present here in Sweden.  I have searched on the  internet some  time now with no luck, but when I surfed in on your site I was back in business again.
Now I will say goodbye and wait for an answer.
Greetings Peter in Sweden"

Regards,
Barry Emmott

Wow. 16 years later...
I am now trying to assist a Swedish descendent of Thomas Emmott too. I found an old newsletter entry from 2009 which mentions a CD being available at Colne Library, named the FINNISH CONNECTION. This is about Thomas. It may well be that this is informatoin already available on the Internet, but I am in the process of obtaining information from the librarian, who has promised to take a look at the CD for me and see what else they may have on Thomas, once she has the oppotunity. Covid restrictions will delay this, but I am hopeful of receiving information in the near future. :-)

Hi
From a newspaper from 1822 in Sundsvall, Sweden.
Thomas is recorded as coming from Craven, Yorkshire. He had to publish a note in the paper to see if anyone disapproved of him getting married as he couldn't prove he was single.

Just noting my interest in this - I have an Emmott ancestor too, though no known connection to Sweden or Finland.

The surname is almost certainly connected with the area around Colne known as Emmott, but it has spread to surrounding places too. Colne is in Lancashire, right on the border with Yorkshire, and the Craven district of Yorkshire is immediately on the other side. I think there was quite a bit of movement between Yorkshire and Lancashire around there, making it hard to be sure exactly where people came from.

Does anyone know of any Emmott DNA studies? Mine is a 4x great grandmother, so there might not be much there to match against, but given the large number around there, it might help someone with more recent Emmotts.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson
