Christ Church, Bradford, Manchester (Complete thanks)
« on: Thursday 21 July 11 13:16 BST (UK) »
This is a long shot

I am trying to find a photo of this long gone church and graveyard. Located across the road from what is now MCFC "Eastlands" football ground

The images website does not have any  :'(

Might have to be a readers letter in the local rag I think  :)

Regards
Ken

There is a photograph of Christ Church, Carfax Street, Bradford in the Manchester image collection, images 41-60. Is this the church you mean?

Hi Berrie

Yep - seen that one but it is the wrong one.

The church I am after was surrounded on all four sides by

Church Street
Wovenden Street
Victoria Street
Cowper Street

Just across Ashton New Road - south of Bradford Iron Works

Do you think that one of those streets may have been re-named Carfax Street? I've found those names on a map but not Carfax Street. I would have thought it unlikely that there would be two churches called Christ Church in Bradford.

Found a map of Bradford in the 60's and Church Street seems to have been renamed Charlesworth Street and Wovenden Street Woodvale Street. Can't find Victoria Street but Cowper Street was still there.

Carfax Street is still there in Gorton M18

All them street were cleared during the slum clearance of the 60's/70's

Great map to show location of the streets and church

There is a picture of Christ Church School, which was opposite the church I think, with an an address on Charlesworth Street.

I think the council website photo is the right one Ken and Berrie, but it's been wrongly labelled.

Genuki have a photo of a church called Calvary which was on the corner of Cross Lane and Carfax St, which as you say is in Gorton, next door to Bradford
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LAN/Gorton/Calvary.shtml

I've got a drawing of Christ Church Bradford in an old book, and it has a spire, like the one in the council photo.
Book is called "Like a Mighty Tortoise" (yes really  ;D) by the Rev. Arthur Dobb, and its a history of the diocese of Manchester. Rev Dobb was an architect before he was ordained so he's done a lot of the illustrations for the book himself, including this one.
Maybe he couldn't find a photo either!

Hi Barbara

Interesting thought but still not convinced, miss labelling could be right for the Carfax St one, but I don't think it is the Christ Church of Bradford.

The Carfax St photo shows a church in a cross shape and no land.

Maps of the Christ Church show it a different shape to the Carfax photo and was located in the middle of it's own large graveyard, the familysearch images has burials from 1863-1943 so must have been fairly large

But still keeping an open mind  8)

Amazon has that book I might just invest  ;D
