Hi Mick and welcome to Rootschat
I haven't researched the MARTION line, hopefully AJO will see your message and be able to help you.
I have researched the REID line but have been unable to find when Mary Jane's father Adam REID came to Australia. He was a shoemaker. In 1869 Adam went to Hospital in Adelaide for an injury to his elbow. He names his place of birth as Lanarkshire, Scotland.
Adelaide hospital records:REID Adam , Age 41, male, married, years in South Australia 18, Born Lanarkshire Scotland, Residence Wirrabara, Labourer, religion Baptist, admitted 11 October 1869, injury to elbow, discharged 11 Oct 1869. Adm 69/982
Going by the hospital record Adam must have arrived in Sth Australia c1851.
I haven't researched this line for quite a while but was never able to find any shipping references to Adam's arrival. He may have arrived in another State other than SA. I'm not really sure that he would have been of Baptist religion either. I have no information on Adam's parents names.
Did find the following once and thought it may be him:-
1841 Census, Lanarkshire:-
Adam REID in the 1841 census is in a House of Refuge for Boys in Barony, Lanarkshire - age 15, a Nailer, b Lanarkshire. The House of Refuge had Teachers of three trades:
Weaving
Nailmaking
Shoemaking
Age wouldn't be exact for Adam but quite often on the 1841 Census ages were rounded down to nearest 5, i.e. 5,10,15,20 etc. If this was the case, that could well be Adam Reid. Maybe that is where he learnt his trade as a Shoemaker.
Hope that helps a little,
Sashar
