Hi my Name is Mick, I am a direct descendent of Peter Christie Martion (my Grandfather) I have records of 10 children and I have been told there was 11.

I am seeking information on the parents of Peter Christie Martion and Mary Jean McCoy (Reid), entry to Australia and any heritage going back from there.

My brother is building a family history and I am also gathering info on the Western Australian branch of the family

Hi Mick and welcome to Rootschat  :)
I haven't researched the MARTION line, hopefully AJO will see your message and be able to help you.
I have researched the REID line but have been unable to find when Mary Jane's father Adam REID came to Australia. He was a shoemaker.   In 1869 Adam went to Hospital in Adelaide for an injury to his elbow.  He names his place of birth as Lanarkshire, Scotland.
Adelaide hospital records:REID Adam , Age 41, male, married, years in South Australia 18, Born Lanarkshire Scotland, Residence Wirrabara, Labourer, religion Baptist, admitted 11 October 1869, injury to elbow, discharged 11 Oct 1869. Adm 69/982
Going by the hospital record Adam must have arrived in Sth Australia c1851.
I haven't researched this line for quite a while but was never able to find any shipping references to Adam's arrival.  He may have arrived in another State other than SA.   I'm not really sure that he would have been of Baptist religion either.   I have no information on Adam's parents names.
Did find the following once and thought it may be him:-
1841 Census, Lanarkshire:-
Adam REID in the 1841 census is in a House of Refuge for Boys in Barony, Lanarkshire - age 15, a Nailer, b Lanarkshire. The House of Refuge had Teachers of three trades:
Weaving
Nailmaking
Shoemaking
Age wouldn't be exact for Adam but quite often on the 1841 Census ages were rounded down to nearest 5, i.e. 5,10,15,20 etc.   If this was the case, that could well be Adam Reid.  Maybe that is where he learnt his trade as a Shoemaker.

Hope that helps a little,
Sashar

Hi Sasha

Thank you for your prompt response and yes I think it may help a bit

It is interesting that records are showing a crossover of names e.g. McCoy and Coy relating to the same person which adds confusion to the chase and makes it difficult to verify details.

I have found that there is reference to Peter Christopher Martion and Peter Christie Martion.

Also Mary Jane Martion (McCoy) and Mary Jean Martion (McCoy)

They are my Grandparents - 1929 copy of one of their children's birth register records them as:
Peter Christie Martion (father) also Army record shows this name
Mary Jean McCoy (mother)

Trying to get something verified prior to this is proving to be more difficult.

It is interesting the bit about the shoemaker - My Father was very good at working with leather which I had put down to years of working with horses and the harnesses that go with that but it may be a trend passed down through the family.

Thank you again, perhaps we can share any information we find.

Regards

Mick

Hi Mick,
Yes, the names in this family interchange quite a lot.   Some of the REID family can also be found as REED, READ.
Most of the records I have found in relation to Mary have been as Mary JANE and sometimes just JANE.    I believe it is quite normal for the Scottish names JEAN and JANE to be interchanged.   Maybe how it is pronounced to the person writing the records is why it has been altered between JANE and JEAN.
I do have a transcript of Mary Jane's death record which I can give you if you don't already have that.

Regards,
Sashar

Hi Sasha

I do not have the transcript of Mary Jane's death record and would certainly be interested in seeing that.

In WA the records are local to the state and at this stage I am not certain what state the persons of interest were born for birth/death records to be researched or if they were part of immigration.

Any information that has already been researched will be of great value.

Regards
Mick

Hi
very new here - first posting!  I'm researching this part of the family too... Coy / McCoy - (John James Coy, AKA James McCoy and Mary Jane Reid AKA with a variety of spellings!)
Also interested in Peter Martion.
I have some of the info you are looking for, I think.
cheers

Hi DawnKim,

Welcome to RootsChat,  great place for family history buffs.

As I type this reply up, you have only made the one post.   If you were to make just a couple more, you will then have access to all parts of RChat, including the personal message system.

You only need to reply "Hi" on two separate posts  :)

Cheers,  JM
