I cant find him in 1871, but if he was still in the army he could be serving abroad.

From FindMyPast.

Discharged 23rd October 1879, after serving 21 years 8 days, including 11 years 5 months in East Indies.

Attested 30th September 1858, age 18.

8 pages available from FindMyPast - might be worth a few credits to get them?

Long medical history - which shows where he was stationed when hospitalised - unfortunately suffering from gonnorhea!! :o
