Builth Tollgates
« on: Friday 29 July 11 15:04 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am trying to find information regarding tollgates in Builth.

My great great grand parents were Isaac and Elizabeth Price who, as recorded in the 1851 1861 census, were living at Toll Gate Halfield Terrace Builth. Elizabeth's occupation is recorded as Tollgate Keeper.

Halfield Terrace does not show up on any of my internet searches.

I was under the impression that there were 2 tollgates in Builth; however I have now been informed that there were 6.

Does anyone have any information on Builth tollgates?

Does anyone know where Halfiled Terrace was?

Thanks

William Price

Hello William  :)

Welcome to Rootschat!

This site has a map which shows 2 toll bars in 1840:

Hi Morgan

Thanks for your response. I was already aware of that map, that is were I got the information on there being 2 tollgates.

It looks as thought I made an error in my post, Should have been 1861 census.

Also looking back to the original census record, the entry for the tollgate is recorded on the sheet that contains information for dwellings in Cattle Market. So I assume that the tollgate was adjacent to the Cattle Market. Not sure where I got Halfield Terrace from, but away from base at present so do not have all transcripts with me.

Update:-

I got Halfield Terrace from the census transcript. However the image of the census record shows the entry on the page for the Cattle Market, thus the transcript contains a major error.  So, a lesson learnt; do not rely on transcripts alone, check them against the image of the record.

Thanks again

Hello  :)

where did you get the information that there were 6? I have since found this site which says "By the 1830s..... toll houses had been set up on each of the principal roads out of Brecon — on the road north to Llandefaelog, the roads north-east to Llan-ddew and Felinfach, the south-east to Crickhowell, south-west to Merthyr, and west to Sennybridge and Llandeilo."

this could be 5 or possibly 6  ;D

and Powys Council archives have several documents relating to the Breconshire Turnpike Trust in their collection, including auction of tolls from toll gates:

Hi William

Have you seen this link?

There is an interesting link at the bottom about Rebecca Riots and the smashing of tollgates.
