Father's profession ?
« on: Saturday 30 July 11 13:56 BST (UK) »
Can someone please tell me the father's profession ?

It looks like 'Fisherman' to me, but there's too many letters ?

The baptism was at St. Alfeges, Greenwich, in 1848.

RIP 1949-10th January 2013

Best Wishes,  Nick.

It looks like "Fisherman" to me, too.
The "dot" above the "m" is offputting -as it makes it look like the last letters are "mian" - but I think the "dot" is nothing to do with the word
Hope you can understand my reasoning ???

Definitely fisherman I'd say. The 'm' looks odd because the last downstroke is detatched from the first two downstrokes.

I don't think the dot has anything to do with the word. There is a similar dot over the 'b' of Elizabeth.

Fisherman; many people including me tend to get a bit carried away when writing, and put in more strokes than needed.

Wood Wharf is in Greenwich and I suppose a wharf is a reasonable place for a fisherman to hang out.

Trish :)

Thanks, Trish, I did have those, but I only found little George's baptism yesterday, when I found he was actually baptised Robert George.  It was then that I found the father's profession, which may explain why I have never found him on a census - he was always out fishing  :)

I think George William Nesmith was still alive in 1851 (probably at sea), and I've never found a death record for him, although the NESMITH name is ripe for mis-transcription  :)

P.S. I have just found a review of a new book which tells of life in Wood Wharf in Victorian times..... if you scan down to the comments section at the bottom, there is an email address where you can find out how to buy the book - see http://www.thegreenwichphantom.co.uk/2011/05/victorian-wood-wharf-and-greenwich-riverside-1820-2010/

Hi Nick,
George may have died 1851 or before that as looks like Elizabeth remarried;
Elizabeth Sarah NESMITH, Dec 1851, Greenwich, 5 378

Possible Death Reg;
George NEASMITH, Dec 1849, Shoreditch, 2 345

Elizabeth Sarah NESMITH, Widow, Father William FORREST, Occp Waterman
Robert William PARSELL, Widower, Father THOMAS Parsell, Occp Mariner
22 November 1851, St Nicholas, Deptford, Kent

As I said earlier you may already have all of this?
1861 Census
8 Frederick Street,
Greenwich, Kent
RG9/398/7/7
Robert W PARSELL, 40, Head, Widower, Mariner, born New South Wales
ROBERT G Parsell, 13, Son, Sholar, born Resth, Greenwich

Death Reg for an Elizabeth PARSELL, June 1861, Greenwich, 1d 377

Wow an Australian connection with Parsell:)
