You need to go into it's Properties (by right clicking). What are the total size in Kb and the size in pixels? You cannot create pixels that are not there. If too small it will just pixellate when you try to enlarge it, and the photo enhancers need a reason size to work with.

You may be able to contact the source and ask them for a larger file version.

Hi Joe :)

It would be best if you contacted the owner of the photo and ask if you could have a copy, explaining that it's your relative.

In this way you would get a good copy and avoid any copyright issues.  Many people who put up images on the internet deliberately make them small/compressed to avoid people  copying them.

Hi Ken,
The photo was taken in 1881 in millbank prison it is what we would call a mug shot today i suppose,so it would be poor quality,i have tried to increase the size, but it pixelated right away.however it as found its way on to a research site,on which you can look at it through their enhanced viewer.

Joe.

Hi Gnu.The photograph is on a research site taken from criminal records so who does actually own these kind of photographs,it would make my day to get a good copy of it.

Hi Joe

It would most likely be the webmaster. Does it have a 'contact' button?

If you put up a link to the site, we could have a look.

Hi Gnu.
I have just been looking at the source of the photograph,it was imaged from the national archives.it can be used for research and education.
I researched the records locally as there were a lot of  previous misdemeanors and then 3 crown court trials resulting in prison sentences, two locally the last in millbank, hence no prison record with photograph locally,
There are 14 pages to the record all told.
Excuse my ignorance but am i correct in thinking it is not the done thing to cut and paste the location on the site of this record.
Joe.

Hi  :)

I assume that it was in the criminal records section, then.

Can you give me the name and dates (see it was 1881  :-[  ) and I'll have a look at the images.  They should be OK - maybe it's the way that you're downloading.

I think it might be OK to give the site location address. I've seen other posters do it.

Hi Gnu.
She is obviously a colorful individual born 1848ish spent most of her life in Wellington, Shropshire,no record of her after her release?
